Avoid Vitamin D: Experts’ Harsh Warning against Using it to Prevent Fractures or Falls

Revised Position: Experts Now Advising Against Vitamin D Supplementation for Fall and Fracture Prevention

In a surprising turn of events, nutrition and bone health experts are now advising against the wide-spread practice of vitamin D supplementation for prevention against falls and fractures. A major review published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has led these professionals to reassess their previous recommendations.

The BMJ review analyzed data from more than 80 studies involving over 100,000 participants, finding no significant benefit from vitamin D supplements in preventing falls or fractures, even in individuals with vitamin D deficiency.

"Our findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation should not be recommended for protecting older people from falls and fracture," said lead researcher Dr. Mark Bolland of the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Previous guidelines, including those from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US, had recommended vitamin D supplementation for bone health. However, these recommendations are now being reevaluated in light of the BMJ review’s findings.

The change in advice not only impacts the millions of people who take vitamin D supplements but also the significant cost to healthcare systems. It is estimated that in the US alone, vitamin D supplement use doubled between 2012 and 2017, reaching 41% of the adult population.

"Given the high global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and supplementation, these findings have major implications for public health, health care professionals, policymakers, and the pharmaceutical industry," said Dr. Pharm Lee questioned why such major recommendations have changed. "In the absence of trials proving a benefit, we question why vitamin D supplementation has been recommended to protect older people from falls and fractures."

It seems that the debate surrounding vitamin D supplementation is far from over. As new evidence emerges, healthcare professionals worldwide are urged to keep up-to-date with the latest research and recommendations regarding vitamin D and bone health.
