The Pack Smart Group has secured the ability to report the physical record sales made by its clients through Bandcamp to the Official Charts Company for the first time.
A Change for Independent Artists
This development addresses a previous issue in the UK chart reporting system. Previously, physical releases sold via Bandcamp were not counted towards the UK charts unless customers likewise downloaded the digital version of the album.
Now, all sales from The Pack Smart Group’s clients can be reported to the Official Charts Company (OCC). This change is expected to particularly benefit independent artists in genres like jazz, blues, and metal, where chart positions are often determined by small sales margins.
Seánna Holland, business development director at The Pack Smart Group, explained that for years, artists selling physical formats through Bandcamp have been aware that a significant portion of those sales were not reflected in the UK charts.
“That disconnect has been frustrating for artists and their teams, because the fans were there and the purchases were real, but they weren’t always reflected in the charts,” Holland said. “Being able to report those sales feels like a really positive step for the independent sector and it ensures that when fans support an artist directly, it genuinely counts.”
This news comes after Bandcamp enforced a ban on music generated wholly or in substantial part by artificial intelligence, prohibiting its employ for impersonation or copyright infringement.
