NORMAL, Ill. – The Belmont University women’s basketball team suffered an 83-78 overtime defeat at the hands of Illinois State Friday night. Despite building a 12-point first-half lead and taking a 33-25 advantage into halftime, the Redbirds (16-10, 10-5 MVC) rallied to outscore the Bruins (16-10, 12-3 MVC) 43-35 in the second half and overtime.
A Second-Half Shift
Illinois State shot 61 percent (14-of-23) in the second half and held Belmont to just 3-for-9 shooting in the extra period. With the score tied at 68 and 16.5 seconds remaining in regulation, a three-point attempt by Belmont’s Jailyn Banks went wide.
In overtime, with Belmont trailing 79-76, three-point attempts from Banks and Sanaa Tripp were unsuccessful. Illinois State’s Addison Martin secured a defensive rebound, and Grace Nelson sealed the victory with two free throws.
Banks Leads Belmont Offense
Jailyn Banks led the Bruins with a career-high tying 26 points, including a career-best six three-pointers. Tuti Jones, Belmont’s all-time steals leader, recorded a career-high eight steals, contributing to the Bruins’ 13 takeaways.
