Berlin – A fire tragedy in the Friedrichsfelde district of Berlin has resulted in the deaths of a 26-year-old mother and her 5-year-old son. The couple’s 9-month-old baby died shortly after the fire broke out on Wednesday evening.
According to police, the 26-year-old woman, originally from Vietnam, died on Saturday from the effects of the fire that occurred on February 11th in a hospital. The boy succumbed to his severe injuries on Friday afternoon.
“Both were resuscitated after the fire, taken to hospitals and have been receiving intensive medical treatment there ever since,” stated a spokesperson for the Berlin Police.
Mother and Children Found Unconscious
On Wednesday evening, a fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m. In an apartment on the third floor of a 20-story building on Dolgenseestraße in Berlin. Witnesses immediately called the fire department. When emergency services arrived, an apartment was fully ablaze!
The woman and her two children were discovered unconscious in the hallway and were immediately resuscitated. All three were taken to a hospital, where the baby died that evening. The mother and older son also did not survive – the boy died on Friday, and the mother one day later.
A total of 70 residents were brought to safety by the fire department, including the 75-year-old tenant of the apartment where the fire originated. He was taken to the hospital with injuries. The apartment is believed to have been a so-called “messie” apartment, with rooms cluttered with items, which complicated firefighting efforts.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, according to police. Investigations by the LKA are ongoing.
