Bob Melvin Returns to A’s: A Recent Chapter for the Veteran Manager

Melvin Back in Green and Gold

Bob Melvin is rejoining the Oakland Athletics, but not as their manager. The team has hired Melvin as a Special Assistant, Baseball Operations, bringing him back to an organization he knows well. Melvin’s love for the A’s dates back to his childhood, frequenting the Coliseum to watch players like Sal Bando in the 1970s. He previously managed the team from 2011-2021.

According to A’s general manager David Forst, the move is about leveraging Melvin’s experience. “In the last few weeks, we talked a little bit more, and it seemed like a decent fit for us to bring him back for his perspective on players and guys in the system,” Forst said. The familiarity Melvin has with the organization and its personnel was a key factor in the decision.

What Will Melvin Do?

Melvin’s new role will involve observing the team during Spring Training, offering insights on players alongside the front office and scouting department. Once the regular season begins, he will focus on evaluating the A’s Minor League affiliates, providing feedback on top prospects. Forst emphasized the value of having Melvin’s eyes on the minor league system, noting that he and assistant GM Dan Feinstein don’t often get to witness those players firsthand during the season.

Melvin, who has the second-most wins (853) as A’s manager, trailing only Connie Mack, expressed his enthusiasm for the position. “It means a lot,” Melvin said. “I’m just going to try to help out however I can. The straightforward part for me is the familiarity with the people in the organization.”

Continuity and the “A’s Way”

The A’s have a reputation for fostering continuity within their organization, and Melvin’s return aligns with that philosophy. Melvin noted the existence of an “A’s Way” of doing things, and his familiarity with the team’s culture will allow for a smooth transition. Many members of the current A’s coaching staff served alongside Melvin during his previous tenure, including current manager Mark Kotsay.

Kotsay welcomed Melvin’s return, stating, “It’s great that Bob is coming back. The history and the relationships that he’s had here, it’s an easy transition. Bob knows how we function and the way we work. To have Bob here sitting at a macro level, I think that’s invaluable. He can help everyone see things through a different lens.”

Looking Ahead to Las Vegas

Melvin is committed to this role for the long term and intends to remain involved with the A’s as they prepare for their relocation to Southern Nevada in 2028. “No more managing,” Melvin said. “It takes its toll on you a little bit. I’ve done it a long time and have been incredibly lucky to be able to do it as long as I have in as many different places as I have. I’m excited about the new role and excited about being in an organization that I have a lot of familiarity with.”
