Carrie-Anne Moss Refused Role After Being Told To Dress Sexier

Carrie-Anne Moss turned down a substantial payout for an audition after being instructed to dress sexier, a decision she made shortly before securing her breakout role in the 1999 sci-fi hit The Matrix, according to an interview reported by The Independent.

Rejecting Demands for the 1999 Sci-Fi Hit

The Canadian actor, 59, revealed that she relied on meditation to process frequent rejection in the industry, which ultimately gave her the resolve to pass on the lucrative project. Moss told The Telegraph that the encounter left her exhausted by such expectations, particularly after her time on Models Inc., a soap opera spin-off of Melrose Place centered on an Los Angeles modeling agency.

“I was playing a character who was taken advantage of all the time,” Moss said. “I barely remember because she was making out with this guy [then] making out with that guy all the time. I have blocked it out!” Shortly after declining that part, she landed the role of computer programmer Trinity.

Stepping Away from Film to Raise Children

Following the success of The Matrix in 1999, Moss appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Memento, the romance film Chocolat, the Marvel series Jessica Jones, and three additional Matrix sequels. Despite her rising profile, she stepped away for a major break to raise her three children—Owen, 23, Kaden, 20, and Frances, 17—with her husband, actor Steven Roy, whom she married in 1999.

Reflecting on that period in an interview with The Independent last year, Moss recalled holding her baby and weighing career offers against family time. “At the end of my life, will it matter to me that I have another movie on my résumé? Or will it matter to me that I held my baby?” she said, calling the choice the greatest decision of her life.
