L.A.’s best meme account is asking Angelenos to crown the city’s worst intersection

by Rachel Morgan News Editor February 26, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Los Angeles drivers are facing a new challenge: determining the city’s worst intersection. A month-long voting campaign launched March 1 by the Instagram account Americana at Brand Memes aims to identify the most frustrating junction in the city through a March Madness-style bracket.

A City United by Frustration

The competition comes as no surprise given the widespread frustration with Los Angeles traffic. According to the account’s anonymous author, “L.A. Is unfortunately a car-reliant city…we all have to deal with these intersections on a daily basis. And each intersection is badly unique.” The poll intends to tap into the shared experience of navigating the city’s complex roadways.

Did You Know? The L.A. Times recently ranked intersections based on traffic volume and accident data, identifying Highland and Sunset as particularly problematic.

Voting takes place daily around 11 a.m. On Americana at Brand Memes’ Instagram stories, pitting two intersections against each other. The process will continue until April 1, when the “worst” intersection is declared.

A History of Competition

This isn’t the first bracket-style competition hosted by Americana at Brand Memes. Five years ago, the account began similar polls on Twitter, first crowning the Vista Theater as the best movie theater and then the fountain at the Americana as the best thing to do there. In 2025, the competitions moved to Instagram, with Koreatown being named the worst parking lot or garage.

Expert Insight: The popularity of this poll highlights the shared, often negative, experiences that bind Angelenos together. Identifying a “worst” intersection isn’t about objective data; it’s about acknowledging a common source of daily aggravation.

The current competition allows for “wild card” suggestions, submitted via comments on an Instagram post, with the caveat that freeway intersections are ineligible. Suggestions from Time Out L.A. Staff include Five Points in Lincoln Heights and the intersection of Ventura and Sepulveda Boulevards.

Americana at Brand Memes acknowledges the difficulty in predicting a winner, noting that “titans” like the Beverly Hills six-way stop and the intersection of Virgil, Sunset, and Hollywood could still be defeated.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does voting initiate?

Voting began on March 1 and will continue daily around 11 a.m. On Americana at Brand Memes’ Instagram stories.

How long will the competition last?

The competition will continue until April 1, when the worst intersection will be chosen.

Can I suggest an intersection that isn’t on the initial list?

Yes, you can suggest a “wild card” intersection by leaving a comment starting with “WILDCARD:” on Americana at Brand Memes’ designated Instagram post, but freeway intersections are not eligible.

What intersection do you think best embodies the frustrations of Los Angeles driving?

Austin Weather: Warm Temps Continue, Red Flag Warning West of City

by Chief Editor February 26, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Central Texas is bracing for a cold front Thursday, but residents shouldn’t expect a significant temperature drop. While a front will sweep across the region, afternoon highs are forecast to remain in the 80s through the weekend.

Warm Temperatures Ahead of the Front

Thursday will begin with cloudiness and light south winds, with temperatures around 60 degrees. The cold front is expected to reach the Hill Country by mid-morning and move across the rest of Central Texas throughout the afternoon. Before the front arrives, temperatures could briefly rise as air descends from the Balcones Escarpment, potentially pushing temperatures near 90 degrees in parts of the Austin area.

Did You Know? Austin’s record high temperature for February 26th is 93 degrees, set in 1954.

Thursday’s forecast high of 89 degrees is almost 20 degrees above normal for this time of year, though still short of the 1954 record. Following the front’s passage, winds will shift to the north and become breezy, with gusts near 20 mph.

Wildfire Risk and Shifting Allergens

A red flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for areas west of Austin from 11 a.m. To 7 p.m. Thursday due to increased wildfire risk. While Austin is not currently included in the warning, a moderate threat will persist along the I-35 corridor. Friday will bring slightly cooler temperatures, with morning lows in the 50s and afternoon highs in the lower 80s.

Expert Insight: The compressional heating phenomenon highlights the complex interplay of topography and weather patterns. This localized warming can create conditions that deviate significantly from broader regional forecasts, requiring careful monitoring.

South winds are expected to return over the weekend, bringing increased humidity, and temperatures. While February has been dry, a shift in the weather pattern could bring small chances of rain by midweek next week. Residents experiencing cedar fever may find some relief, but it’s likely to be temporary.

As cedar pollen declines, other tree pollens – including ash, spring elm, mulberry, and oak – are expected to become prevalent in the coming weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time will the cold front arrive in Austin?

The cold front is expected to reach the Hill Country by mid-morning and sweep across the rest of Central Texas through the afternoon on Thursday.

What is compressional heating?

Compressional heating happens when air is forced downhill, causing it to compress and warm up as it sinks. In this case, it’s air descending from the Balcones Escarpment.

What is the wildfire risk?

The wildfire weather threat will be higher west of Austin, where a red flag warning is in effect from 11 a.m. To 7 p.m. Thursday. A moderate threat will still exist along the I-35 corridor.

How will these changing weather patterns impact your outdoor plans this week?

USA Weather: Extreme Snow in New York, Heatwave in Texas – Polar Vortex Impact

by Chief Editor February 26, 2026
written by Chief Editor

The New American Weather Reality: Extreme Swings and a Changing Climate

The United States has always been a land of meteorological extremes, but recent events – from record-breaking snowfall in New York to near-summer temperatures in Texas – are amplifying a trend that’s becoming increasingly common. This isn’t simply “folle meteo” (crazy weather), as some Italian outlets are calling it; it’s a visible manifestation of a climate system responding to global warming in complex and often unpredictable ways.

The Polar Vortex: A Key Driver of Extreme Weather

At the heart of these dramatic shifts lies the polar vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. Normally, this vortex is a relatively stable, swirling mass contained within the Arctic. However, a weakening or disruption of the vortex – often triggered by sudden stratospheric warming events – allows frigid Arctic air to plunge southward. This southward excursion is facilitated by a meandering jet stream.

Think of the jet stream as a river of air high in the atmosphere. When it flows in a relatively straight line, weather patterns tend to be more stable. But when it becomes wavy, it creates large ridges, and troughs. These waves can pull Arctic air down into the mid-latitudes, while simultaneously allowing warmer air to surge northward. The US’s geography – a vast, uninterrupted landmass stretching from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico – makes it particularly vulnerable to these swings.

Why the US is Ground Zero for Weather Volatility

Unlike Europe, which is shielded by the Alps and other mountain ranges, the US lacks significant latitudinal barriers. This allows for rapid and direct exchanges of air masses between the Arctic, the continental interior, and the Gulf Coast. The absence of these barriers means that cold air can sweep down from the north with little resistance, and warm, moist air can surge northward just as easily. This creates a potent recipe for extreme temperature contrasts and intense weather events.

Did you know? The US has recorded some of the largest temperature swings on Earth, with differences of over 30°C (54°F) in just 24 hours. This is a direct result of its unique geographical position and the dynamics of the polar vortex.

The Role of a Warming Climate

While extreme weather has always been part of the American experience, climate change is undeniably exacerbating these patterns. A warming Arctic is reducing the temperature difference between the pole and the mid-latitudes, which weakens the polar vortex and makes it more prone to disruption. Warmer ocean temperatures also provide more moisture to fuel intense storms, leading to heavier snowfall and rainfall.

Recent research from organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggests that the frequency of extreme weather events in the US is increasing. For example, a 2023 NOAA report highlighted a significant rise in billion-dollar weather disasters over the past decade, many of which were linked to extreme precipitation and temperature fluctuations. NOAA Report

Case Studies: New York Snowstorms and Texas Heat Waves

The recent blizzard that blanketed New York City with over 50cm (20 inches) of snow is a prime example of how a disrupted polar vortex can lead to intense winter storms. The combination of cold Arctic air, Atlantic moisture, and a coastal low-pressure system created ideal conditions for heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions.

Simultaneously, cities like Dallas, Texas, experienced unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs reaching into the 20s Celsius (70s Fahrenheit). This stark contrast highlights the “mountains russe” (roller coaster) effect of the jet stream, where cold air descends in one region while warm air rises in another.

Looking Ahead: What Can We Expect?

The trend towards more frequent and intense weather swings is likely to continue as the climate warms. Scientists predict that disruptions to the polar vortex will become more common, leading to more extreme winter weather events in North America and Eurasia. We can also expect to see more frequent and severe heat waves, droughts, and wildfires, particularly in the western US.

Pro Tip: Stay informed about weather forecasts and warnings from reliable sources like the National Weather Service. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather conditions and have a plan in place for dealing with extreme events.

FAQ

Q: Is climate change causing more extreme weather?
A: Yes, climate change is exacerbating existing weather patterns, making extreme events more frequent and intense.

Q: What is the polar vortex?

Q: Why is the US particularly vulnerable to extreme weather?
A: The US’s geography – a vast, uninterrupted landmass – allows for rapid exchanges of air masses between the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico.

Q: What can I do to prepare for extreme weather?
A: Stay informed, have a plan, and be prepared for rapid changes in weather conditions.

Q: Will these extreme swings become the “new normal”?

Road traffic fatalities hit 10-year high in Singapore

by Rachel Morgan News Editor February 26, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Singapore’s roads are experiencing a worrying trend, with traffic fatalities reaching a 10-year high of 149 deaths in 2025. This marks an increase from 142 deaths in 2024 and surpasses the 141 recorded in 2016.

A Rise in Accidents and Injuries

Alongside the increase in fatalities, the number of people injured in traffic accidents similarly rose, climbing from 9,342 in 2024 to 9,955 in 2025. The Traffic Police (TP) released these statistics on February 26th, noting a “persistent upward trend” over recent years.

Vulnerable Road Users at Risk

A particularly concerning development is the dramatic increase in deaths among elderly pedestrians. The number more than doubled, rising from 11 in 2024 to 27 in 2025 – and all of these fatalities involved pedestrians. Motorcyclists also remain disproportionately affected, accounting for 53% of all traffic deaths in 2025, despite making up only 15% of the total vehicle population.

Did You Understand? In 2025, there were 18 fatal accidents involving jaywalking, the same number as in 2024.

Enforcement and Safety Measures

In response to these troubling figures, the TP is increasing enforcement efforts, including activating speed enforcement in more red-light cameras. Enhanced penalties for speeding offenses went into effect on January 1st. Speed limiters are being expanded to include lorries with a maximum laden weight between 3,501kg and 5,000kg, with a deadline of July 1st for those registered before January 1, 2018.

Expert Insight: The increase in fatalities and injuries, particularly among vulnerable road users like the elderly and motorcyclists, underscores the need for a multi-faceted approach to road safety. While enforcement measures are crucial, fostering a culture of mutual respect and attentiveness among all road users is equally key.

The TP has also raised safety standards for motorcycle helmets and child restraint systems and will begin using new Traffic Violation Enforcement Cameras on March 1st. These cameras will identify offenses like crossing double white lines and stopping in yellow boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the total number of traffic accident fatalities in 2025?

There were 149 traffic accident fatalities in 2025, a 10-year high.

How many elderly pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2025?

27 elderly pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2025, more than double the 11 deaths recorded in 2024.

What is the TP doing to address the rise in speeding violations?

The TP is increasing enforcement, including activating speed enforcement in more red-light cameras and implementing enhanced penalties for speeding offenses.

Given the concerning rise in traffic fatalities and injuries, what steps can individual road users take to improve safety for themselves and others?

Trump’s Fraud Claims vs. Massachusetts: Fact Check & SNAP Benefits Data

by Chief Editor February 26, 2026
written by Chief Editor

President Donald Trump this week announced a new “war on fraud,” to be led by Vice President J.D. Vance, and suggested that alleged “corruption” in states like Massachusetts, California, and Maine may be as severe as that in Minnesota. This follows a massive fraud scandal in Minnesota that prompted Governor Tim Walz not to seek reelection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Trump’s claim about Massachusetts accurate?

The source indicates the claim does not appear to be accurate. The numbers linked to public benefits fraud in Massachusetts are much smaller than those in Minnesota.

How much fraud has been uncovered in Massachusetts?

State Auditor Diana DiZoglio announced the discovery of nearly $12 million in public benefits fraud in Massachusetts in FY25, including $4.1 million in SNAP fraud. The U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts alleges nearly $7 million in SNAP fraud occurred at two convenience stores. Federal prosecutors have also announced charges linked to over $1 million in alleged fraud.

What is the difference between fraud and “leakage” in Massachusetts?

Jim Stergios of the Pioneer Institute argues that a more pressing problem in Massachusetts is “leakage,” which refers to outdated systems causing mistaken payments rather than intentional fraud. In 2024, the federal government found 22% of Massachusetts unemployment insurance payments represented leakage or fraud, a figure that has since been reduced to 16%.

Did You Know? The Feeding Our Future scandal in Minnesota, a scheme to provide false meals with federal money during the pandemic, cost taxpayers at least $300 million, according to the Department of Justice.
Expert Insight: The timing of President Trump’s “war on fraud” announcement, and the singling out of states with generally progressive politics, suggests a strategic effort to galvanize conservative support and potentially justify future benefits cuts. The accusations, even if lacking firm statistical backing, serve a clear political purpose.

The addition of Maine to the list of states targeted in this “war on fraud” may be linked to that state’s large Somali population and Trump’s previous comments describing Somalis as “pirates,” as well as ongoing tensions between Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills.

Given the political context and the differing scales of reported fraud, will this “war on fraud” lead to concrete policy changes, or will it remain primarily a rhetorical strategy?

Minneapolis woman whom Ilhan Omar took to State of the Union needed medical care after arrest

by Rachel Morgan News Editor February 26, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

WASHINGTON — Aliyah Rahman, a Minnesota woman invited to the State of the Union address by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., required hospital treatment after being arrested during President Donald Trump’s speech on Tuesday, according to both Rahman and Omar.

Rahman silently stood up during the portion of the President’s speech focused on restoring funding for the Department of Homeland Security, while others remained seated. When U.S. Capitol Police asked her to sit down, she refused.

During the encounter with Capitol Police, a standing ovation erupted from the crowd, which Rahman attempted to explain to officers as a reason not to be removed. Capitol Police then began to pull Rahman, who was using a crutch, toward the exit, prompting protest from another guest who urged them to be less aggressive.

Did You Know? Aliya Rahman was previously forcibly removed from her car by federal agents in January while attempting to reach a doctor’s appointment.

Rahman stated in an interview with Democracy Now! that she was in police custody and then at the hospital until just before 4 a.m. She described being arrested “so physically that two other attendees upstairs attempted to intervene in officers pulling on my shoulders” after informing them of existing injuries.

According to Rahman, the House sergeant-at-arms informed her she was arrested simply for “standing up. Silently. No buttons, no facial expressions, no gestures, no signs. Not one sound. Standing up.” She noted that others were standing throughout the speech.

Expert Insight: The arrest of a guest during a State of the Union address is a highly unusual event, and the circumstances surrounding it—including the prior encounter with immigration officials—are likely to intensify scrutiny of federal enforcement tactics.

Capitol Police stated Rahman was arrested on charges of unlawful conduct and disruption of Congress, noting that demonstrating is prohibited within the Congressional Buildings and that she refused lawful orders to sit down.

Rep. Omar released a statement Wednesday condemning Rahman’s arrest and calling for a “full explanation of why this arrest occurred,” stating that the response “sends a chilling message about the state of our democracy.”

Omar’s office described Rahman as a disabled person with autism and a traumatic brain injury from Minneapolis, who was taken to George Washington University Hospital and later booked at Capitol Police headquarters.

Minneapolis has recently been a focal point of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, known as Operation Metro Surge, during which federal agents shot and killed Americans Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Democrats in Congress have demanded changes to Department of Homeland Security enforcement tactics, leading to a partial government shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was Aliyah Rahman arrested?

Aliyah Rahman was arrested for refusing to obey lawful orders to sit down and for disrupting Congress, according to Capitol Police. She stated she was arrested for silently standing during President Trump’s speech.

Who invited Aliyah Rahman to the State of the Union address?

Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., invited Aliyah Rahman as her guest to the State of the Union address.

What injuries does Aliyah Rahman have?

Aliyah Rahman has a torn rotator cuff and cartilage tears in both shoulders, and also has a traumatic brain injury and autism, according to a description provided by Rep. Omar’s office.

As debates over immigration policy and congressional decorum continue, what does this incident suggest about the boundaries of protest and the rights of individuals within the halls of government?

Turkey Considers Military Entry into Iran to Prevent Refugee Influx

by Chief Editor February 26, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Turkey is considering a potential military entry into Iranian territory, prompted by concerns that a conflict could trigger a large influx of refugees toward its eastern border. The stated goal is to prevent refugees from crossing into Turkey and to mitigate the potential demographic and social impact of a crisis in Iran, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Rising Tensions and Contingency Planning

Ankara’s concerns are growing amid escalating regional tensions and the possibility of a U.S.-led military attack against Tehran. Turkey has already updated its contingency plans, ranging from establishing emergency refugee camps near the border to potential military operations to create safe zones within Iran, should a state collapse hinder control of migration flows.

Did You Know? Turkey currently hosts nearly three million Syrian refugees.

NATO Surveillance Shift

In response to the heightened risk, NATO has increased the frequency of its AWACS surveillance flights from Konya, Turkey, shifting its focus from Russia to Iran. Sources consulted by Bloomberg indicate this operational change is a direct response to the growing threat of a U.S. Offensive.

Diplomats from the United States and Iran are reportedly intensifying efforts to reach a new nuclear agreement. This comes after President Donald Trump issued warnings of potential limited attacks and demanded concessions before the start of March. Washington has deployed two aircraft carriers and numerous fighter jets to the Middle East, with Trump stating he is “considering” military options.

Expert Insight: Turkey’s position reflects a complex calculation of risks. Whereas a military intervention in Iran carries significant dangers, the potential for a large-scale refugee crisis poses a substantial threat to Turkey’s already strained economy and social fabric.

Turkish officials have declined to comment on the increased deployment and shift in surveillance priorities, a stance echoed by the NATO General Secretariat. However, sources emphasize that Turkey’s official strategy includes preventative measures and diplomatic efforts to avoid regional escalation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is driving Turkey’s concern?

Turkey is concerned that a conflict in Iran could lead to a large influx of refugees, particularly Afghan and Pakistani citizens residing in Iran, potentially destabilizing Turkey’s economy and society.

What is NATO’s role in the situation?

NATO has increased its surveillance flights over Iran from Konya, Turkey, shifting its focus from Russia in response to the escalating tensions.

What is the United States doing regarding Iran?

The United States has deployed two aircraft carriers and numerous fighter jets to the Middle East and is pursuing a new nuclear agreement with Iran, while President Trump has warned of potential military action.

As tensions continue to rise between the United States and Iran, and Turkey prepares for multiple contingencies, what impact might a potential conflict have on the broader geopolitical landscape of the region?
