Pakistan pitches ‘vast’ investment opportunities to Bangladesh amid warming ties

by Rachel Morgan News Editor May 10, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Pakistan is actively seeking to strengthen its bilateral relationship with Bangladesh, focusing on economic cooperation and security. During a visit to Dhaka, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the “vast opportunities” available for investment across various sectors.

A Strategic Shift in Diplomatic Ties

The push for closer cooperation comes as ties between the two nations have significantly improved. This warming of relations follows the ousting of Bangladesh’s former premier, Sheikh Hasina, during bloody protests in 2024.

The diplomatic rapprochement is particularly notable given the historical tension between the two countries. Bangladesh originally seceded from Pakistan after a bloody civil war in 1971, a conflict that long hindered bilateral relations.

Both nations have agreed to bolster their cooperation in the areas of business, trade, and culture. To facilitate this, they agreed to increase the mutual exchange of delegations.

Expert Insight: The transition from historical hostility to active cooperation in security and trade suggests a pragmatic pivot. By focusing on shared threats—such as drug smuggling—and economic incentives, both nations may be attempting to stabilize their regional standing and bypass long-standing political grievances.

New Security Agreement Against Drug Smuggling

Beyond economic goals, the two countries are partnering on internal security. On Saturday, Pakistan and Bangladesh signed an agreement specifically designed to prevent the smuggling and illegal transportation of drugs.

This agreement was finalized during a meeting between Minister Naqvi and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Salahuddin Ahmed. The two officials decided to establish a joint working group between their respective interior ministries.

Under this new framework, relevant agencies from both countries will exchange timely information regarding drug networks and smugglers. This operational coordination could lead to more effective disruptions of illegal trafficking routes in the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary goal of the new security agreement?

The agreement, signed by Mohsin Naqvi and Salahuddin Ahmed, aims to prevent the illegal transportation and smuggling of drugs through the exchange of timely information between relevant agencies.

Russia’s Military Quiet During Ceasefire, Prepares for Offensive; No Prisoner Exchange Yet

by Chief Editor May 10, 2026

Russian Army Halts Fire, Prepares for Offensive During Ceasefire

The Russian military has scaled back its operations during a three-day ceasefire declared by President Donald Trump, but It’s using the pause to reinforce its offensive capabilities, according to Ukrainian sources. Meanwhile, plans for a prisoner exchange, also announced by Trump, have hit a snag, with both Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of violating the truce.

Ceasefire Utilized for Reinforcements

Victor Treгубов, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Joint Forces Operation, stated on Saturday, May 9, that the Russian army has indeed reduced its activities, but is using the ceasefire to rotate troops, reinforce positions and prepare for renewed offensives. He added that the Ukrainian army is also taking advantage of the lull to improve its logistics and rotate its forces.

Prisoner Exchange Stalls

Trump announced a three-day ceasefire from May 9 to 11, during which he expected both sides to halt fighting and exchange prisoners in a “1000 on 1000” format. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin cast doubt on the possibility of such an exchange, stating that Moscow had submitted a list of only 500 Ukrainian military personnel for consideration. Ukraine, he claimed, was not ready for the exchange.

Later, on the same day, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that lists for the prisoner exchange were still being compiled, and that physical exchange would begin after an agreement was reached. He also emphasized that Russia would continue its full-scale war against Ukraine after the ceasefire.

Blame Game Over Ceasefire Violations

Despite the noticeable decrease in fighting, both Russia and Ukraine continue to accuse each other of ceasefire violations. Russia’s Ministry of Defense accused Ukrainian forces of attacking Russian positions with drones and attempting to storm occupied territories. In contrast, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces had launched 121 attacks on Ukrainian territory by 10 PM on May 9, including targeting border regions in the Sumy area.

Did You Know? The ceasefire, announced by Trump on May 8, was intended to last from May 9 to 11, during which both sides were to halt fighting and exchange prisoners.
Expert Insight: Samantha Carter, Chief Editor of Newsy-Today.com, notes, “While both sides seem eager to use the ceasefire to their advantage, the lack of progress in the prisoner exchange casts a shadow over the prospects for peace. As the ceasefire comes to an end, the focus will shift back to the battlefield, where Russia has been preparing for renewed offensives.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the ceasefire lead to a long-term peace?
A: As of now, there is no indication that the ceasefire will result in a lasting peace. Both sides continue to accuse each other of ceasefire violations, and Russia has stated that it will continue its war after the ceasefire.
Q: What is the status of the prisoner exchange?
A: The prisoner exchange, as envisioned by Trump, has not yet taken place. Russia and Ukraine have not agreed on the terms, with Russia submitting a list of only 500 Ukrainian servicemen and Ukraine stating that it is not ready for the exchange.
Q: What happens after the ceasefire ends on May 11?
A: After the ceasefire ends, both sides are expected to resume full-scale military operations. Russia has been using the pause to reinforce its offensive capabilities, and Ukraine is taking advantage of the lull to improve its logistics and rotate its forces.

As the ceasefire comes to an end, one question remains: Will the lull in fighting lead to a lasting peace, or will the conflict resume with renewed intensity?

by Rachel Morgan News Editor May 10, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

A major demolition operation in Ekurhuleni has left residents of the Cloverdene N12 Informal Settlement in distress after the destruction of the area’s tallest structure. The three-storey house, which stood as a landmark in the community, was torn down by bulldozers amid scenes of chaos and shouting.

The demolition drive began on Tuesday, 6 May, and has now entered its third day. Authorities involved in the operation include the South African National Defence Force, private security, and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, alongside the Human Settlements Department and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Land Invasion Unit.

Loss of a Lifelong Investment

The demolished home belonged to 37-year-old Lindiwe Fikeni, who had lived in the settlement for 16 years. Fikeni stated that she built the three-storey residence from scratch, describing the experience of watching it collapse as painful.

Fikeni suggested that residents built in Cloverdene because they had hope, inspired by her own efforts to build from scratch. Residents gathered around Fikeni, chanting that the councillor was “heartless” as emotions peaked.

Stein Erik Hagen Leaves Behind One of Norway’s Most Significant Art Collections

by Chief Editor May 10, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Stein Erik Hagen, one of Norway’s most prominent art collectors and wealthiest individuals, has died at his home following cardiac arrest. He leaves behind a legacy defined by the Canica collection, which is regarded as one of the most significant private art holdings in Norway and the Nordic region.

The Scale of the Canica Collection

The Canica collection is recognized for its focus on Nordic and North European visual arts from the 19th and 20th centuries. The assembly includes a diverse range of paintings, sculptures, and graphics.

The Scale of the Canica Collection
The Scale of Canica Collection

As of 2025, the collection consisted of approximately 2,000 artworks and photographs. Art expert Morten Zondag estimated the value of the collection at 1.5 billion kroner.

The collection features works by renowned artists such as Edvard Munch, Rolf Nesch, and Per Kleiva. Other notable pieces include Per Krohg’s 1918 painting “Den hellige familie / Madonna med barnet” and Svend Johansen’s 1917 work depicting the Russian elite and the murderer of Rasputin.

Did You Know? In 2024, Hagen sold 333 works from the Canica collection to the Ako foundation, led by Nicolai Tangen, for 240 million kroner.

Impact on Norway’s Art Status

Maria Mediaas Jørstad, managing director of Kunstsilo in Kristiansand, stated that Hagen played a vital role in elevating Nordic art both nationally and internationally. She noted that his commitment helped lift Norway’s overall position as an art nation.

Hva var det med Stein Erik «Rimi-Hagen»?

The ambition behind the Canica collection was to fill gaps within Norwegian museum collections, specifically by focusing on the pioneers of Nordic modernism. This goal was pursued through exhibitions and the loaning of works to various public art institutions in Norway and abroad.

The Ako foundation, whose collection is managed by Kunstsilo, continued to acquire pieces from Hagen into 2025, purchasing an additional 44 works. These included “art-historical key works” from the period between 1910 and 1970, including pieces by Swedish modernist Otto G. Carlsund.

Expert Insight: Hagen’s strategy of targeting “missing” pieces in public archives demonstrates a sophisticated approach to private collecting. By focusing on gaps in the national record, he transformed a private asset into a tool for cultural preservation, though his willingness to pivot toward private foundations like Ako suggests a complex relationship with state-run institutions.

Institutional Tension and Future Outlook

Despite his contributions, Hagen’s relationship with public institutions was not without friction. In 2016, he halted negotiations with the National Museum regarding access to his works.

Institutional Tension and Future Outlook

Hagen expressed at the time that he felt the Canica collection was being misused in political disputes concerning the future of the National Gallery on Tullinløkka. He stated he “could not bother” with the process until the Storting had addressed the gallery’s future use.

Following his passing, the remaining works in the Canica collection may be subject to new management or further sales to foundations. It is likely that more “key works” could eventually be transitioned into public-facing institutions to fulfill the original ambition of filling museum gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What was the estimated value of the Canica collection in 2025? Art expert Morten Zondag estimated the collection to be worth 1.5 billion kroner.
  • Which organization currently manages the works sold to Nicolai Tangen? The collection acquired by the Ako foundation is managed by Kunstsilo in Kristiansand.
  • What was the primary goal of the Canica collection? The ambition was to fill gaps in Norwegian museum collections, with a particular emphasis on the pioneers of Nordic modernism.

How should private collectors balance their personal ownership with the public’s right to access cultural heritage?

Turkey and Saudi Arabia Sign Landmark Solar Energy and Investment Deal

by Chief Editor May 10, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Turkey is moving forward with a strategic energy partnership with Saudi Arabia following a series of agreements signed during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Riyadh on February 3. A key component of these discussions was an intergovernmental protocol focused on Renewable Energy Plant Projects.

Legislative Framework for Solar Energy

A legislative proposal has been submitted to Parliament to implement the terms of the agreement. Under this proposal, Saudi Arabia will establish at least two Solar Power Plants (GES) within Turkey.

In exchange for these investments, Turkey has provided a guarantee to the Saudi government to purchase the electricity generated by these plants for a period of 30 years.

Did You Know? According to the legislative proposal, the land allocated for the solar plants will remain under the ownership of the Electricity Generation Company (EÜAŞ), which will also have the right to take over the plants free of charge after the 30-year period ends.

The proposal specifies that these projects will be characterized as direct foreign investments, funded entirely through external financing and supported by international financial institutions.

The Electricity Generation Company (EÜAŞ) is designated as the entity responsible for purchasing the electricity produced by the facilities over the three-decade term.

Expert Insight: The structure of this deal—combining foreign funding with a long-term state purchase guarantee—suggests a strategy to expand energy capacity without immediate domestic capital expenditure. The eventual transfer of assets to EÜAŞ indicates a long-term state goal of absorbing the infrastructure once the initial investment period concludes.

Saudi Aramco Evaluates Turkish Assets

Recent diplomatic activity has further signaled deepening ties. Last week, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan met with his counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Ankara.

Simultaneously, high-level officials from Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil and gas company, have been evaluating various energy plants in Turkey as part of potential investment efforts.

Journalist Olcay Aydilek reported that the Aramco delegation visited several facilities within the fuel sector. These reports have been confirmed by authorities in Ankara.

Future Outlook

Given the current trajectory, Turkey and Saudi Arabia may further expand their energy cooperation. A possible next step could involve the formal approval of the legislative proposal by Parliament, which would likely trigger the start of construction for the solar plants.

the evaluations conducted by Saudi Aramco could lead to new investment agreements within Turkey’s fuel and energy sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration of the electricity purchase guarantee?

Turkey has guaranteed the purchase of electricity from the Saudi-built solar plants for a period of 30 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will the solar power projects be funded?

The projects will be funded entirely through external financing and will be supported by international financial institutions.

What is the role of EÜAŞ in this agreement?

The Electricity Generation Company (EÜAŞ) will purchase the electricity produced by the plants, retain ownership of the allocated land, and hold the right to take over the plants free of charge after 30 years.

Israel Hits 40 Hezbollah Targets and Kills 10 in Southern Lebanon

by Chief Editor May 10, 2026
written by Chief Editor

The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it targeted 40 Hezbollah infrastructure sites and killed more than 10 militants in southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours.

In an official statement, the military noted that forces from the 91st Division carried out the operations. The targets reportedly included weapons depots, a launch platform, and buildings used for military purposes.

Aerial Interceptions and Drone Challenges

In a separate statement, the Israeli army reported the interception of a “suspicious” aerial target, identified as a drone, in an area where its forces are stationed in southern Lebanon.

Aerial Interceptions and Drone Challenges
Southern Lebanon

The military has acknowledged the difficulty of detecting and intercepting Hezbollah’s fiber-optic drones. These specific drones are described as a significant challenge, having caused casualties among Israeli soldiers.

As of 08:25 GMT, Hezbollah has not issued a response to the statements released by the Israeli army.

Did You Know? According to official Lebanese data, more than 1.6 million people—approximately one-fifth of the population—have been displaced since the current escalation began on March 2.

Truce Violations and Territorial Shifts

The current wave of aggression, which began on March 2, has resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries. While a ten-day truce began on April 17 and was later extended until May 17, reports indicate that Israel continues to violate this agreement daily through bombing and the destruction of homes in dozens of villages.

Israeli forces have pushed approximately 10 kilometers into the southern border during the current conflict. This follows a history of occupation in southern Lebanon, with some areas held for decades and others since the 2023-2024 war.

Expert Insight: The persistence of military operations despite a truce extended through May 17 suggests a critical breakdown in the ceasefire’s efficacy. The strategic push 10km into Lebanese territory, combined with the tactical struggle against fiber-optic drone technology, indicates a conflict that remains highly volatile regardless of diplomatic timelines.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Beyond the current Lebanese border conflict, Israel continues to occupy Palestine and territories in Syria. The Israeli government has refused to withdraw from these areas or support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as outlined in relevant United Nations resolutions.

Israel bombs Beirut’s southern suburb as it targets Hezbollah commander

Potential Future Developments

As the extended truce deadline of May 17 approaches, the situation could see further escalation if violations continue. There is a possibility that Hezbollah may respond to the recent strikes on its infrastructure, which could lead to increased aerial engagements.

the ongoing territorial presence in southern Lebanon may lead to intensified diplomatic pressure or continued military friction along the border.

Frequently Asked Questions

What specific targets did the Israeli army claim to hit?
The army claimed to have attacked more than 40 infrastructures, including weapons depots, a launch platform, and buildings used for military purposes.

What is the current status of the ceasefire in Lebanon?
A truce that began on April 17 was extended until May 17, though it is reported to be violated daily by Israeli bombing and the destruction of homes.

Why are fiber-optic drones considered a major challenge for the Israeli military?
The Israeli military has admitted that these drones are difficult to detect and intercept, and they have been responsible for killing and wounding soldiers.

How do you think the upcoming May 17 truce deadline will impact the stability of the region?

Expert Insight: The presence of representatives from the Druze, Baháʼí, Latin, and Anglican communities, alongside Greek and Russian diplomats, underscores the event’s role as more than a religious rite; it serves as a critical point of interfaith and international intersection in a complex geopolitical region.

Community Honors and Interfaith Dialogue

Following the Liturgy, the event included a procession of the holy icon, a supplication at the tomb of the New Martyr George the Cypriot, and a memorial service for the late Hegumen Philotheos.
