Manhattan clubgoers celebrate Haitian music and culture at long-running Kompa Tuesdays

by Rachel Morgan News Editor February 16, 2026
written by Rachel Morgan News Editor

For 15 years, every Tuesday night, music lovers have gathered at The DL on Delancey St. In Manhattan to celebrate Haitian culture through music and dance. Known as Kompa Tuesdays, the event has become more than just a party, serving as a networking hub and a showcase for Haitian cuisine.

A Hub for Community and Connection

Founded by Fred Lherisson, similarly known as Freddy Boom Boom, Kompa Tuesdays was created to fill a void in New York City’s social scene. Lherisson, a sales executive and New York City native of Haitian descent, envisioned a space where both Haitians and those curious about the culture could connect. “I just wanted Haitians and non-Haitians, just kompa lovers, anyone who is curious about the culture, to have a place to get a feel and taste,” he said.

Did You Know? New York City is home to approximately 150,000 Haitian-American residents, making it the second-largest Haitian-American community in the United States after Florida.

The event, which typically draws around 200 people weekly, offers Haitian specialties like fritay platters and griot sandwiches alongside the vibrant sounds of kompa music. Kompa, created in the 1950s by musician Nemours Jean-Baptiste, is characterized by instruments like tanbou, congas, electric guitars, and trumpets, and features an intimate, rhythmic dance style.

More Than Just a Party

Attendees describe Kompa Tuesdays as a welcoming space for socializing and professional networking. Ernest Barionnette, who works in law enforcement, noted the diverse connections made at the event, including promoters, entrepreneurs, and medical professionals. Dany Syd, a nurse practitioner and ten-year regular, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the opportunity to connect with colleagues from various fields.

Expert Insight: The longevity of Kompa Tuesdays—celebrating its 15th anniversary last month with a mayoral certificate of recognition—suggests a sustained require for cultural spaces that foster community and provide opportunities for networking, particularly within diaspora populations.

Lherisson emphasizes the importance of networking, stating, “Knowledge is power, but who you know matters, too.” He has fostered collaborations with organizations like the Haitian American Nurses Association and the Haitian American Lawyers Association of New York to further facilitate these connections.

Looking Ahead

Given its success in New York City, Kompa Tuesdays may expand. Lherisson has expressed interest in launching a similar event in Miami. If successful, this expansion could indicate a broader demand for spaces celebrating Haitian culture and fostering community beyond New York.

Russia Accuses Ukraine of International Terrorism & Nazism | Zakharova Statement

by Chief Editor February 16, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Russia Accuses Ukraine of International Terrorism, Escalating Rhetoric

Moscow has sharply escalated its accusations against Ukraine, labeling the Kyiv regime as an “international neo-Nazi terrorist cell.” This claim, made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, represents a significant hardening of rhetoric and signals a potential shift in how Russia frames the ongoing conflict.

Zakharova’s Allegations: A Deep Dive

According to reports from Russian state news agency Ria Novosti, Zakharova questioned the international community’s silence regarding what she describes as Ukraine’s transformation. She asked why there hasn’t been more discussion about Ukraine evolving from a “puppet regime playing at democracy” to an “international terrorist cell with unique characteristics, namely a neo-Nazi vein.”

Zakharova further asserted that this “international terrorism” is fueled by external support – weapons, funding, and political backing – originating from a “conglomerate of countries under the aegis of NATO.” She specifically accused Ukraine of targeting not only civilians but also social workers, emergency services personnel, and medical professionals, describing this as an act of “particularly animalistic hatred.”

Terrorism Accusations and International Implications

The accusation of terrorism carries significant weight, potentially justifying further escalation of the conflict under Russia’s own legal and strategic frameworks. It also aims to delegitimize the Ukrainian government on the international stage. This rhetoric echoes previous claims made by Russia regarding the presence of neo-Nazi elements within the Ukrainian military and government, allegations that have been widely disputed by Ukraine and its allies.

Recent Developments: Arms and Provocations

These accusations arrive amidst other claims from Russian officials. Reports indicate allegations that Ukraine is attempting to conduct false-flag operations in Romania and Poland using refurbished Russian drones. Russia alleges that Ukraine, with German co-financing and NATO consent, secretly attempted to produce Sapsan operational-tactical ballistic missile systems capable of striking deep into Russian territory.

The Broader Context: Information Warfare and Propaganda

Maria Zakharova has been a prominent voice in Russia’s information warfare strategy. As the director of the information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, she frequently delivers statements that align with the Kremlin’s narrative. Her comments should be viewed within the context of ongoing efforts to shape public opinion both domestically, and internationally.

In September 2025, Zakharova reacted to reports of a growing Russian-speaking population in Ukraine, dismissing the news as “bipolar.” This highlights a pattern of dismissing information that contradicts the Kremlin’s preferred narrative.

FAQ

Q: What is Russia accusing Ukraine of?
A: Russia is accusing Ukraine of being an “international neo-Nazi terrorist cell” and committing terrorist attacks against civilians and essential workers.

Q: Who is Maria Zakharova?
A: Maria Zakharova is the director of the information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Q: What other accusations has Russia made against Ukraine recently?
A: Russia has also accused Ukraine of preparing false-flag operations in Romania and Poland and attempting to develop long-range missile systems.

Q: Is there evidence to support Russia’s claims?
A: The claims have not been independently verified and are disputed by Ukraine and its allies.

Did you know? Maria Zakharova has been a diplomat since 1997.

Pro Tip: When evaluating information related to the conflict, always consider the source and potential biases.

Storms Bring Tornado Warnings to South, Northeast Thaws & California Braces for Impact

by Chief Editor February 16, 2026
written by Chief Editor

A storm system brought tornado warnings to parts of the Southeast this weekend, impacting Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia and Florida, whereas the Northeast began to experience a thaw after weeks of cold temperatures.

Damage in Louisiana and Beyond

Some of the most significant damage occurred near Lake Charles, Louisiana, where high winds overturned a horse trailer and a Mardi Gras float. A jet bridge at the airport was damaged, and a house’s metal awning was blown into power lines. National Weather Service employees documented the damage.

Power poles were also toppled in Jena, Cheneyville, and Donaldsonville, Louisiana. While no deaths or serious injuries were reported, the storm system continued to move toward south Georgia and the Florida Panhandle, prompting tornado watches on Sunday.

Did You Know? A Mardi Gras float was among the structures damaged by high winds in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Power outages were reported across several southern states, though they were less extensive than those caused by ice storms in Mississippi and Tennessee late last month. As of Sunday evening, a few thousand customers in Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Virginia remained without power, according to PowerOutage.us.

Weather Across the Country

The Northeast is experiencing a shift in weather patterns, with temperatures in Boston climbing into the high 30s and low 40s this week, a move closer to seasonal averages after running nearly 7 degrees Fahrenheit below average last week.

California is bracing for a powerful winter storm bringing thunderstorms, damaging winds, and heavy snow. Jacob Spender, a weather service meteorologist in Sacramento, advised travelers to pack winter safety kits, describing the system as “a bigger system, and a major system.”

Rain in the San Francisco Bay Area is expected to intensify, and the Sierra Nevada, including Lake Tahoe ski resorts, could receive up to seven feet of snow. Residents in some Los Angeles neighborhoods previously affected by wildfires are under evacuation warnings due to the potential for mud and debris flows. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has ordered emergency crews to prepare for potential issues.

Expert Insight: The widespread nature of these storms—affecting both the Southeast and the West Coast—highlights the potential for significant disruption across multiple regions of the country during the winter months. Preparedness and adherence to weather advisories are crucial for minimizing risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What states were under tornado warnings this weekend?

Mississippi and Louisiana were under tornado warnings, and parts of Georgia and Florida were under tornado watches.

How much snow is forecast for the Sierra Nevada?

Forecasters said the Sierra Nevada, including ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, could see up to seven feet (two meters) of snow.

What is the status of power outages?

A few thousand customers were still without electricity in Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky and Virginia as of Sunday evening.

As weather patterns continue to shift across the country, how will communities balance recovery efforts with ongoing preparedness for potential future storms?

Revo Insolvency: Two German Hotels Close – Rügen & Frankfurt

by Chief Editor February 16, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Revo Hospitality Group Insolvency: First Hotel Closures Signal Wider Industry Concerns

The collapse of Revo Hospitality Group, Europe’s largest multi-brand hotel operator, is beginning to have a tangible impact, with the immediate closure of two hotels in Germany: the Aedenlife Hotel & Resort on Rügen island and the Mövenpick Hotel Frankfurt City. These closures, announced on February 16, 2026, represent the first concrete fallout from the group’s insolvency filing in January.

Rügen and Frankfurt Hit First

The Aedenlife Hotel & Resort Rügen, a property boasting a private beach, indoor and outdoor pools, and 93 rooms and apartments, has ceased operations. The hotel’s website now states that bookings are no longer being accepted, and existing guests are being contacted regarding their reservations. Similarly, the Mövenpick Hotel Frankfurt City, a four-star hotel near the Messe Frankfurt trade fair center with 288 rooms, has also shut its doors.

Broader Insolvency and Potential for Further Closures

Revo Hospitality Group filed for insolvency for approximately 140 companies in January, impacting a total of 125 hotels across Germany and Austria. The group operates hotels under various brands, including its own labels and franchise agreements with major chains like Hilton, Accor, and Wyndham. Although the company initially stated it aimed to retain its 5,500 employees and continue operations, the closure of these two properties suggests a more challenging path forward.

Regulatory Insolvency Procedures Complicate Matters

While the initial insolvency filing was in self-administration, regulatory insolvency proceedings have been initiated for four of Revo’s companies, including the operators of the Aedenlife Hotel & Resort Rügen and the Mövenpick Hotel Frankfurt City. So an insolvency administrator will now oversee the process, rather than the company’s management. The Centro Hotel Goya in Wolfsburg and the Centro Hotel National in Frankfurt are also affected by these proceedings, though they remain operational for now.

Financial Pressures and Industry Trends

Rising labor costs, including minimum wage increases, are cited as contributing factors to Revo’s financial difficulties. Increased expenses related to rent, energy, and food have also put pressure on the business. The group’s rapid expansion in recent years is also believed to have played a role in its downfall.

The Future of Multi-Brand Hotel Operators

Revo Hospitality Group’s situation raises questions about the sustainability of the multi-brand hotel operator model, particularly in the face of economic headwinds. The strategy of managing a diverse portfolio of hotels under different brands, while offering potential benefits in terms of market reach and risk diversification, can also create complexities in financial management and operational control.

The Rise of Independent Hotels and Boutique Experiences

Consumers are increasingly seeking unique and personalized travel experiences. This trend favors independent hotels and boutique properties that can offer a more tailored service and a distinct sense of place. While large hotel chains and multi-brand operators can compete by investing in brand differentiation and customer loyalty programs, they may struggle to match the authenticity and intimacy of smaller, independent establishments.

Impact of Economic Uncertainty on Hotel Investments

Economic uncertainty and fluctuating travel demand can significantly impact hotel investments. Periods of economic downturn often lead to reduced travel spending and increased price sensitivity among consumers. Hotel operators need to be agile and adaptable to navigate these challenges, adjusting their pricing strategies, marketing efforts, and operational costs accordingly.

The Role of Technology in Hotel Management

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in hotel management, from online booking platforms and revenue management systems to guest engagement tools and smart room technologies. Hotels that embrace technology can improve operational efficiency, enhance the guest experience, and gain a competitive advantage. However, investing in new technologies can also be costly, and requires careful planning and implementation.

FAQ

What does insolvency in self-administration mean? It allows a company facing insolvency to restructure its finances under its own management, with the oversight of a court and creditors.

How many hotels are affected by the Revo Hospitality Group insolvency? Approximately 125 hotels in Germany and Austria are impacted.

Will employees lose their jobs? Revo initially stated its aim was to retain employees, but the closures of the Aedenlife and Mövenpick hotels raise concerns about potential job losses.

What should guests with existing bookings do? Guests with bookings at affected hotels are advised to contact the hotel directly for information about their reservations.

What caused Revo Hospitality Group to file for insolvency? Rising costs (labor, energy, rent) and rapid expansion are cited as contributing factors.

Did you know? The Revo Hospitality Group, formerly known as HR Group, operated approximately 260 hotels in 135 cities across twelve European countries.

Pro Tip: When booking a hotel, especially with a lesser-known operator, consider purchasing travel insurance that covers insolvency or hotel closure.

by Chief Editor February 16, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Severe gales are impacting the lower North Island of New Zealand, leaving over 30,000 properties without power and prompting evacuations. The wild winds have brought down trees and power lines across a wide area, disrupting travel and daily life.

Widespread Power Outages and States of Emergency

Powerco reports approximately 23,000 properties on its network are experiencing outages, with an additional 10,000 properties without power in the Wellington region. The Manawatū-Whanganui region has been particularly hard hit and is currently under a state of emergency.

Evacuations and Travel Disruptions

Residents on Lincoln Road in Masterton are being evacuated due to the danger posed by unstable trees. Wairarapa assistant commander Ian Wright stated that trees are coming down and represent the biggest risk. Both roads on Lincoln Road have been closed as a precaution.

Air New Zealand has cancelled flights to and from several major centres, including the capital, due to the strong winds. According to chief operating officer Alex Marren, “Safety is paramount and we are continuing to closely monitor conditions, with winds expected to reduce later this morning when we expect to resume services.”

Did You Know? Five districts – Manawatū, Rangitīkei, Tararua, Waipā and Ōtorohanga District – are currently under states of emergency.
Expert Insight: The declaration of states of emergency in multiple districts underscores the scale of the disruption and the potential for escalating risks. These declarations allow local authorities to mobilize resources and coordinate responses more effectively, but also signal a serious situation requiring public vigilance.

What Might Happen Next

If the winds reduce as forecast later this morning, Air New Zealand may resume flights. However, continued strong winds could lead to further flight cancellations and prolonged disruptions. Power restoration efforts could be hampered if trees continue to fall and damage power lines. The states of emergency will be extended if conditions do not improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas are affected by power outages?

Approximately 23,000 properties across the Powerco network and 10,000 properties in the Wellington region are without power.

WNBA Labor Talks: Adam Silver Urges Deal to Avoid Delay to Season

by Chief Editor February 16, 2026
written by Chief Editor

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has urged the WNBA and its players’ association to accelerate labor negotiations to ensure a timely agreement and avoid disruption to the upcoming season, scheduled to begin in early May.

Negotiations Intensify

Speaking during NBA All-Star weekend, Silver acknowledged the urgency, stating, “We are awfully close to the 11th now when it comes to bargaining.” While he did not propose a firm deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement, he emphasized the need for increased pace to prevent a perform stoppage.

Did You Know? The WNBA has expansion franchises planned for Portland, Oregon and Toronto, adding complexity to the offseason schedule.

The league submitted its latest proposal to the players’ union a week prior to Silver’s remarks, including minor increases in revenue sharing and concessions regarding housing. However, a significant gap remains on the central issue of revenue distribution.

Revenue Sharing Standoff

Players are seeking approximately 30% of the gross revenue, while the league has offered over 70% of net revenue. This difference accounts for expenses such as upgraded facilities, charter flights, five-star hotels, medical services, security, and arena costs.

Expert Insight: The disparity in proposed revenue sharing models highlights a fundamental disagreement about how to value player contributions to the WNBA’s growing commercial success. Reaching a compromise will be critical to maintaining the league’s positive momentum.

Silver has stated that WNBA players are expected to receive a “large increase” in pay under the next CBA. He expressed encouragement regarding recent discussions, noting increased engagement between players and team owners.

The timeline for completing offseason business is tight. The WNBA draft is scheduled for April 13, and training camps are expected to begin roughly two months from that date. This necessitates completing both an expansion draft and a collegiate draft, alongside free agency, in addition to finalizing the collective bargaining agreement and its legal documentation.

While WNBA players’ union president Nneka Ogwumike has indicated a strike is not currently imminent, it remains a possibility. Silver stressed the importance of avoiding any disruption to the league’s momentum following a 2025 season marked by record attendance and television viewership.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary sticking point in the WNBA’s collective bargaining negotiations?

The main issue is revenue sharing, with players seeking roughly 30% of gross revenue and the league offering over 70% of net revenue.

What deadlines are looming for the WNBA?

The WNBA draft is scheduled for April 13, and training camps are expected to open roughly two months after that. The league also needs to complete an expansion draft.

What is Adam Silver’s role in the negotiations?

Silver stated he has not been directly at the negotiating table but remains “very involved behind the scenes” and wants to play a productive role in reaching a deal.

As the WNBA experiences unprecedented growth, will both sides be able to reach an agreement that reflects the value of its players and secures the league’s future?
