Authorities have charged multiple men in connection with an alleged $14 million interstate drug supply operation. The syndicate is accused of concealing cocaine within timber shipments in New South Wales.
Investigation Uncovers Extensive Operation
NSW Police established Strike Force Capulin in August of last year to investigate illegal drug supply in the state’s north. The investigation commenced following information received regarding 100kg of cocaine allegedly hidden inside four tonnes of timber planks.
On January 2, a 33-year-old man was arrested in Kingsford, Sydney, allegedly in possession of 2kg of cocaine and $6800 in cash. He has been charged with drug and proceeds of crime offenses and is scheduled to appear in court on February 26. Investigators allege this man had traveled from Ballina to Sydney to collect drugs.
Further investigation on January 4 led to the search of a vehicle at Ballina Airport. Police allegedly discovered 723g of cocaine, 112g of ketamine, and nearly $400,000 in cash within a duffle bag. A search of a mobile phone reportedly revealed images and videos depicting approximately 100kg of cocaine embedded in wooden planks.
The origin of the timber is currently under investigation. Authorities determined the planks were being stored in sheds located on the Gold Coast and in Lismore.
Raids in New South Wales and Queensland
On January 22, strike force detectives, with assistance from Queensland Police, executed search warrants. Six tonnes of wooden planks were seized from a property in Lismore. Simultaneously, Queensland detectives searched a location in Molendinar, Gold Coast, allegedly finding wooden planks within a clandestine drug extraction lab.
Four men – aged 42, 45, 46, and 55 – were arrested and charged with producing cocaine and possessing drug-processing equipment. On January 23, a 33-year-old man was arrested at a home in Ocean Shores, north of Byron Bay, and charged with commercial drug supply and directing a criminal group. He was denied bail and is expected in court today.
