A Local Idol
Patrick Mahomes was more than just a talented athlete to the children in Whitehouse. He was local proof that substantial careers are possible. McCoy knew him not just from afar; Mahomes’ aunt was his third-grade teacher and Mahomes would watch McCoy’s games.
Later, McCoy even trained in baseball under the guidance of Mahomes’ father, former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes. “I really looked up to him,” McCoy said. “Of course, as a kid, you always look up to the high school quarterback. But he saw me play – and I was pretty good.”
Multi-Sport Athlete
Perhaps the most critical influence wasn’t a single conversation, but a principle: Mahomes had shown that specializing early wasn’t necessary. McCoy followed this path, playing football, earning All-State honors in baseball, and winning state championships in the long and triple jumps.
His training schedule was demanding: morning football workouts, afternoon track and field, and evening weight training. He barely slept during the season, and his off-season was practically nonexistent.
This versatility shapes his game today. His explosiveness comes from the long jump, his ball skills from baseball, and his acceleration from sprint work. All of this merges on the field into a profile that Tennessee now values.
From Underrated Recruit to SEC Performer
Despite his athleticism, McCoy was initially overlooked. As a three-star recruit, he received only one Power Conference offer – from Oregon State. There, he transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback and quickly became one of the Pac-12’s top defensive backs.
After conference realignment, he chose to transfer to Tennessee and seamlessly continued his ascent. As a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist, he underscored his status as one of the best defensive backs in the country.
Mahomes likely doesn’t understand the extent of his influence on McCoy’s path. But in Flint, Texas, a career built on versatility and work ethic began – modeled after the most famous graduate of Whitehouse High School.
Potential Chiefs Teammates?
The connection to Patrick Mahomes is now drawing attention at the NFL level. At the Combine, Jermod McCoy confirmed a meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs, who select ninth overall in the draft.
