Warlocks have taken the throne as Diablo 2’s best class 26 years later, and Blizzard seems to be OK with letting them have their fun for now

by Chief Editor February 21, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Diablo 2: Resurrected’s Warlock Revolution – Is This a New Era for Blizzard’s Classic?

Nobody could’ve guessed that Diablo 2: Resurrected would receive a surprise expansion with a new class in 2026, but here we are. That also means the 26-year-old game will have to deal with a major shake-up to its meta, with the warlocks taking over as not only the new flavor of the month, but the new, most powerful flavor of the month.

The Warlock’s Impact: A Meta Shift Unlike Any Other

The Diablo 2 remaster has had seasonal meta changes before, but none of them have been as substantial as this one. Warlocks—and some of the new endgame challenges added in the expansion—have given players a ton of new toys to play with in a game whose best practices have been more-or-less set for decades. Early reports from Diablo YouTubers, like Macrobioboi, say the new demon-summoner class is easily one of the best.

Echoing Strike: The Dominant Build

One build in particular sits above all the rest when it comes to crushing the hardest enemies in the game: the Echoing Strike warlock. This build doesn’t even rely on commanding your pet demons around; it’s purely based on the raw power of the Echoing Strike skill, which basically lets you shoot your weapons at enemies like a shotgun.

The ability to bypass elemental immunities with the build’s physical damage is a significant advantage. Unlike many other skills in the game, Echoing Strike allows players to consistently deal damage regardless of enemy resistances.

Leveling and Accessibility: A Warlock for Everyone

The Echoing Strike build seems to have a high gear requirement to get going, so you probably won’t be able to jump right into it when the new ladder season starts. But it won’t take long to get to that point due to the fact that warlocks also happen to have some of the fastest leveling builds as well. Blizzard made a new class that can’t really go wrong with any skill as long as you know what you’re doing.

Warlock vs. The Established Classes: A Surprisingly Close Race

Surprisingly, the gap between warlocks and the older classes isn’t as huge as Diablo 4’s new classes tend to be when they’re fresh out of the oven. Sorceresses and paladins remain competitive, so if being an aged scholar of demons isn’t your thing, you can still blast through the game and see the expansion’s new terror zones and uber boss fight as the other classes. But after 25 years of playing the same stuff, I imagine most people are going to strive the new guy and see how far they can push him.

The Future of Balance: What’s Next for Diablo 2: Resurrected?

Blizzard hasn’t touched warlocks with any balance changes since the launch of the expansion. By the looks of it, there isn’t anything so egregiously broken that needs to be fixed, which is impressive for a class that was designed so long after the others. The most notable quirk is this immortal build by Coooley, but it sacrifices so much damage output for the gimmick that it probably won’t ruin anything.

I’ll be curious to see what kind of balance tweaks Blizzard does eventually build. There’s a world where nothing changes and Diablo 2 players just have to get used to warlocks taking the throne as the top class. I think it’s more likely that Blizzard will knock them down a peg after some of the excitement has died down so it’s not playing whack-a-mole trying to balance a game that wasn’t meant to operate like a live-service joint. Blizzard has said that future expansions aren’t off the table though, so Diablo 2 might be headed for a future where it doesn’t feel so retro after all.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What makes the Warlock class unique?
Warlocks can manipulate demons, imbue weapons with magic damage and utilize a unique passive ability allowing them to wield two-handed weapons alongside offhands like shields and Grimoires.
What are the three skill trees available to Warlocks?
The three skill trees are demonic binding, eldritch weapons, and arts of chaos.
Is the Echoing Strike build beginner-friendly?
While powerful, the Echoing Strike build requires a significant gear investment to be effective.

Pro Tip: Experiment with different Warlock builds! The class offers versatility, and you might find a playstyle that suits you better than the current meta favorites.

The events in Lyon are not isolated. Across Europe and North America, universities are increasingly becoming focal points for political polarization. The rise of social media has amplified extreme viewpoints and facilitated the organization of protests and counter-protests. This creates a challenging environment for university administrators who are tasked with protecting free speech while ensuring the safety of students and faculty.

Security Measures and Their Limitations

Universities are responding to these challenges with a range of security measures, including increased security personnel, stricter event permitting processes, and enhanced monitoring of online activity. However, these measures are not without their limitations. Overly restrictive security protocols can stifle legitimate political expression and create a climate of fear. Security personnel may not always be equipped to handle complex situations involving ideological clashes.

The Role of University Leadership

Effective university leadership is crucial in navigating these turbulent times. Administrators must foster a culture of respectful dialogue and encourage students to engage with diverse perspectives. They must also be willing to take a firm stance against violence and hate speech. Clear policies regarding acceptable behavior and consequences for violations are essential.

The Impact of Political Affiliations

The case of Quentin Deranque highlights the increasing entanglement of student activism with broader political movements. Deranque was described as a fervent nationalist and was associated with the Némésis collective. This raises questions about the extent to which universities should allow students to express their political affiliations on campus. Balancing the right to free expression with the need to maintain a neutral academic environment is a delicate task.

Future Challenges and Potential Solutions

Looking ahead, universities will need to develop more sophisticated strategies for managing political polarization and ensuring campus safety. This may involve investing in conflict resolution training for students and faculty, creating spaces for constructive dialogue, and partnering with law enforcement agencies to address potential threats. It will also require a commitment to upholding the principles of academic freedom and intellectual diversity.

Stack Overflow & Cloudflare Launch Pay-Per-Crawl to Monetize AI Data Access

The AI Data Grab and the Rise of Pay-Per-Crawl: A New Era for the Internet

The internet’s foundational principle of open access to information is undergoing a seismic shift. The surge in artificial intelligence (AI) development, and the massive datasets required to fuel it, has created a tension between free access and the need for content creators to protect their work. Stack Overflow and Cloudflare are at the forefront of addressing this challenge with a novel solution: a pay-per-crawl model.

The Disruption of the “Open vs. Block” Model

For years, platforms like Stack Overflow operated on an “open versus block” approach. Content was generally accessible to bots, with malicious activity being the primary trigger for blocking. However, the rise of AI crawlers seeking data for model training has fundamentally altered this dynamic. These crawlers aren’t necessarily malicious in the traditional sense – they aren’t crashing websites – but their commercial exploitation of data poses a significant threat to content providers.

Pro Tip: Understanding the difference between malicious bots and AI crawlers is crucial. Traditional bot mitigation focuses on preventing denial-of-service attacks, while the new challenge is managing commercial data scraping.

How Pay-Per-Crawl Works: A Technical Overview

The pay-per-crawl system, co-launched by Stack Overflow and Cloudflare, utilizes Cloudflare’s bot categorization and Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules. When a crawler identified as requiring payment attempts to access content, it receives a 402 “Payment Required” message. This isn’t a complete block, but a request to compensate for access. This allows publishers to decide how their content is accessed and monetized.

Josh Zhang, a Site Reliability Engineer at Stack Overflow, explained that historically, managing bots involved a reactive “whack-a-mole” approach of blocking malicious actors. Now, the focus is shifting towards proactively managing access and potentially monetizing it. The system’s ease of implementation, through a Cloudflare interface, was a key benefit for Stack Overflow.

Beyond Blocking: The Strategic Value of Data Licensing

Pay-per-crawl isn’t intended to replace traditional data licensing agreements. Instead, it offers a complementary approach. Comprehensive enterprise contracts remain valuable for large-scale data access, but the pay-per-use model provides flexibility for smaller, more targeted data needs. This opens up new revenue streams for content providers and caters to a wider range of potential customers.

Janice Manningham, a Strategic Product Leader at Stack Overflow, highlighted that the pay-per-crawl model allows for a different type of access control, potentially attracting businesses that wouldn’t typically engage in large licensing deals. It allows bots to scrape only the data they need, with appropriate payment.

The Future of the Bot Ecosystem

The collaboration between Stack Overflow and Cloudflare signals a broader trend: publishers are reclaiming control over their content. Will Allen, VP at Cloudflare, emphasized the importance of empowering content creators to decide how their data is accessed. This includes not only controlling access but also understanding who is accessing the content and what they are doing with it.

Cloudflare is also exploring new payment protocols, like X402, to streamline the payment process and potentially allow for machine-to-machine transactions, further automating access control.

Real-World Impact: Early Results and Observations

Stack Overflow observed that simply implementing the 402 payment request caused some bots to cease activity, suggesting a deterrent effect. The dashboarding provided by Cloudflare allowed Stack Overflow to quickly assess the impact of the new system and identify potential monetization opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 402 Payment Required error?
It’s an HTTP status code indicating that the request cannot be fulfilled until the user (or bot) completes a payment.
Is pay-per-crawl a replacement for data licensing?
No, it’s a complementary model. Licensing remains valuable for large-scale access, while pay-per-crawl offers flexibility for smaller needs.
Who benefits from this model?
Content creators benefit by gaining control over their data and potentially generating new revenue streams. AI developers benefit from access to data, albeit at a cost.
Did you know? The traditional internet model relied on reciprocal value exchange – content providers offered free access in exchange for traffic and attribution. AI-driven data scraping disrupts this model by extracting value without providing equivalent benefit.

This new approach represents a fundamental shift in how the internet operates, moving towards a more sustainable and equitable model for data access and monetization. As AI continues to evolve, expect to see more platforms adopt similar strategies to protect their content and ensure a fair exchange of value.
