A significant temperature drop is expected for the South Island this weekend as a cold snap brings cooler conditions after a warm Wednesday. While most of the North Island and the northern reaches of the South Island are forecast to experience temperatures in the mid to late 20s on Wednesday, a change is on the horizon.
Coldest Air of the Year
NIWA is forecasting that a front will bring “some of the coldest air of the year so far” to the South Island. MetService predicts a high of just 15 degrees Celsius for Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill on Friday, with little improvement expected over the weekend.
The cold front will begin impacting Southland, Otago, Canterbury, and parts of Marlborough from Wednesday night, according to MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane. A second front arriving towards the weekend is expected to continue the cooling trend, particularly along the south and east coasts of both islands.
NIWA meteorologist Chester Lampkin indicated that a west south-west change will likely bring showers and thunderstorms to parts of the South Island on Thursday. The impact on the North Island is expected to be felt starting Monday.
Meteorologists are also monitoring a possible low pressure system developing near Vanuatu. While current modelling suggests it should remain away from New Zealand, its development and movement are being tracked daily.
