China’s Film Industry Enters the Age of Virtual Production with AI

The Chinese film industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual production technologies. A recent surge in investment and innovation is reshaping how movies and television shows are made, promising greater efficiency, cost savings, and creative possibilities.

The Rise of AI-Powered Virtual Studios

Located in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province, the Bochai AI Virtual Media Base is at the forefront of this revolution. This facility, boasting the world’s largest single-structure LED virtual studio, is currently being used to produce a film centered around Hong Kong soccer. The studio utilizes a 50-meter diameter arch-shaped screen to render real-time scenes, such as the Hong Kong Kai Tak Sports Park, creating immersive environments for actors and viewers alike.

According to New Chong, project director at Bochai Media, these virtual studios offer significant advantages over traditional filming methods. “It’s difficult and expensive to shoot on location, especially for long-term projects,” he explains. “Virtual studios provide the space and systematic support needed to meet creative requirements. That’s why we’ve brought the entire stadium indoors.”

Efficiency and Cost Savings Through Digital Assets

The shift towards AI-driven virtual production isn’t just about creating visually stunning environments. It’s also about streamlining the filmmaking process and reducing costs. New Chong highlighted how, in the past, elaborate sets built for period dramas were often largely dismantled after filming. Now, digital assets can be stored in a library and reused, simplifying lighting and camera adjustments.

Since its official launch in July of last year, the Bochai AI Virtual Media Base has already overseen over 30 film projects and has secured contracts with approximately 10 companies eager to join the hub. This year alone, the facility is slated to produce 89 short-form dramas using its proprietary AI platform.

Beyond Zhejiang: Expanding Capabilities Across China

The trend extends beyond Zhejiang Province. Jiangsu Province’s Yangzheng Video Media Base has introduced an on-demand temperature-controlled underwater studio. This studio leverages digital and smart technologies to realistically simulate massive waves, offering a one-stop solution for underwater filming. The studio can simulate over 200 types of waves, up to 3 meters high, with a filming depth of 11 meters and temperature control up to 32 degrees Celsius.

A Fundamental Shift in Filmmaking

Experts believe this technological transition is fundamentally changing the landscape of Chinese filmmaking. Wang Shu, deputy director of the Science and Video Media Convergence Committee of the China Science Writers Association (CSWA), predicts that “AI will make film and television production more efficient and intelligent.”

Pro Tip:

Consider the potential for virtual production to reduce the environmental impact of filmmaking by minimizing the need for travel and physical set construction.
