Columbus police have arrested 33-year-old Rovan Spears, alleging he was responsible for a series of burglaries in northwest Columbus. Spears is facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated burglary and attempted rape.
Investigation and Arrest
On January 9, officers responded to two separate reports of burglaries in progress along the Hard Road corridor, between Sawmill Road and Smoky Row Road. Throughout the day, additional reports of attempted burglaries came in from surrounding neighborhoods. Security camera footage reportedly showed a person in dark clothing attempting to enter homes by checking for unlocked doors between midnight and 5:30 a.m.
Court documents detail allegations that Spears entered a home through an unlocked patio door and entered a sleeping woman’s bedroom, where he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. The woman reportedly struggled and screamed, prompting Spears to flee to another residence.
At the second home, Spears allegedly entered through another unlocked patio door and entered a bedroom where a woman was sleeping next to her husband. He is accused of groping the woman until she awoke, at which point he fled.
Additional Charges
Spears was also arrested on an existing warrant for strangulation. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court on Saturday.
