French production company Cottonwood Media has bought back the entire stake held by its parent firm, Federation Studios, returning to fully independent status while maintaining distribution ties for its established tween and teen catalog. David Michel, Zoé Carrera Allaix, and Cécile Laurenson founded Cottonwood in 2014 before it became a Federation subsidiary in 2015.
Cottonwood Media Regains Independence From Federation Studios
Cottonwood Media is operating as an independent company once again after founders David Michel, Zoé Carrera Allaix, and Cécile Laurenson executed a buyout of parent firm Federation Studios’ entire stake. Federation initially acquired its position in Cottonwood back in 2015, a deal that also made Michel a founding partner of Federation. Laurenson and Carrera Allaix will continue managing daily operations alongside Michel under the restructured ownership model.
Despite the ownership split, commercial ties remain intact between the two French entities. Federation Studios will continue handling global sales for Cottonwood’s existing library through its Federation International division. The new agreement also grants Federation first-look distribution rights for Cottonwood's upcoming television and film productions.
Strategic Shift Toward Young Adult Coproductions
The management team pursued the buyout to secure greater operational agility as they pivot toward young adult programming. According to company statements, Cottonwood intends to capitalize on a recent market revival for YA content by targeting demographics aged 16 to 25 and 18 to 29. The studio plans to roll out several ambitious international coproductions tailored to these older audiences shortly.
In a joint statement, founders Michel, Laurenson, and Carrera Allaix explained that the buyout timing aligned with both their growth strategy and the broader industry’s renewed appetite for YA storytelling. They noted that maintaining strong bonds with Federation ensures a smooth transition for legacy properties while allowing the prodco to move swiftly on new financing and broadcast partnerships.
Established Tween and Teen Catalog
Cottonwood built its reputation in the live-action tween and teen television sector through major international co-productions. Notable projects include Find Me in Paris, which aired on Hulu and ZDF, and Theodosia, distributed via HBO Max, ZDF, and Globo. Additional live-action credits feature Spellbound—backed by Hulu, ZDF, and France Télévisions—alongside The Lady Grace Mysteries for ZDF and BBC Children’s.
Within animation, the company has split its focus between preschool offerings and older children’s series. Past credits include the preschool program The Ollie & Moon Show for France Télévisions and Netflix. The studio is currently in production on 20 Dance Street, a project commissioned by France Télévisions and ZDF.
