Daugavpils and Latvian Basketball Union to Build FIBA-Standard Court at Arhitektu Street
Daugavpils will build a new open-access basketball court meeting International Basketball Federation (FIBA) standards at Arhitektu ielā 10, the city municipality announced. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) under the regional development support program “New Basketball Court for the Future Stars,” expanding recreation options in the Ķīmijas neighborhood.
The facility will feature a FIBA-compliant surface and two FIBA 3×3 “Level 2” basketball hoops. The full-size court accommodates both 3×3 play and traditional five-on-five games, supporting individual training sessions and team matches alike.
Division of Responsibilities Between Daugavpils Dome and LBS
Daugavpils City Council voted on Thursday to approve a cooperation agreement with LBS to move the infrastructure project forward. Under the accord, LBS purchases and installs the specialized court surface and both basketball hoops, while providing technical consultations on FIBA requirements.
The municipality is responsible for constructing a sub-base that meets technical specifications, granting site access to contractors, and handling surrounding territory improvements where possible. Following completion, LBS will transfer the surface and hoops into municipal ownership free of charge. Daugavpils Dome will subsequently cover all maintenance costs, including surface markings, technical upkeep, visual repairs, and guaranteed public access.
Construction on Arhitektu Street Finishes by September 2027
Construction work on the Arhitektu Street site is scheduled for completion by September 2027. The upgraded facility will serve children, youth, and adults for daily physical activities.
The municipal administration notes that residents in the Ķīmijas neighborhood gain an enhanced outdoor venue for basketball, while young athletes secure an upgraded space to hone their skills away from indoor gymnasiums.
