Demi Vollering Begins Title Defense at Setmana Ciclista Valenciana
The road to the Tour de France Femmes heats up this week as 2023 champion Demi Vollering makes her season debut at the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. The Spanish stage race begins on February 12th in Gandia and concludes four days later in Valencia.
Returning to a Familiar Victory
Vollering starts her second season with FDJ-SUEZ at the four-stage race, returning to the event where she launched her successful 2025 season. Last year, she secured overall victory, finishing 34 seconds ahead of Movistar’s Marlen Reusser.
A Challenging Course Ahead
The race features a varied terrain, but stage 3, from Agost to La Nucia, will be the decisive test. This queen stage boasts 2,600 metres of elevation, including the first-category Port de Tudons (15km at 5%) and the second-category Port de Confrides (6.4km at 4.8%).
Stages 1, 2, and 4 present less demanding climbs, with riders facing 1,300 metres of elevation gain on the first two stages and 1,000 metres on the final stage, including the second-category Port de l’Oronet (5.4km at 4.9%) at 31km from the finish line.
Preparation and Reconnaissance
The European champion has been meticulously preparing for the race, completing a 152.5km reconnaissance ride on much of the crucial stage 3 course last Friday.
Competition on the Horizon
While Vollering is the clear favourite to defend her title, other strong contenders are expected to participate, including world champion Magdeleine Vallieres, Pauliena Rooijakkers (UAE Team ADQ), Liane Lippert (Movistar), and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal).
