Berlin – Deutsche Bahn is implementing body cameras for its employees across regional and long-distance travel, as well as at all train stations. This decision is among the immediate measures taken following a security summit convened by Bahn chief Evelyn Palla (53) in response to a violent incident.
The security summit, which began this morning, includes representatives from the federal and state governments, trade unions, associations, and public transport operators. It was called after the fatal attack on train conductor Serkan C. (†36) in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The incident sparked widespread outrage. The train conductor was attacked by a passenger who did not have a valid ticket and was being asked to leave the train. He sustained severe head injuries and died in hospital. The alleged attacker, a 26-year-old Greek national, is currently in custody.
Palla’s decision addresses a key demand from the Railway and Transport Union (EVG), which has called for the widespread use of body cameras, including audio recording, to better document and track verbal abuse towards employees. Employees with customer contact in regional transport are already able to use bodycams.
The EVG is also urging that, going forward, two train attendants consistently check tickets on regional trains, rather than the current practice of often having only one.
According to Deutsche Bahn, around 3000 physical assaults on its employees were reported last year. While this represents a slight decrease compared to the previous year, the EVG has emphasized that the sense of security among staff has significantly deteriorated, citing a survey of around 4000 employees.
