Easter Candy Price Wars: Shelves Empty as Discounts Deepen

Price cuts on Easter candy continue, according to a check by Nettavisen on Friday morning. The price war has raged all week, and in the final stretch before Palm Sunday, prices on several items have been more than halved compared to the start of the week.

Nettavisen visited seven stores on Friday morning to check the status. Around the shelves, the most popular products are now being completely emptied, and in several places, customers are met with gaping holes where the marzipan and chocolate eggs used to be.

Dramatic Price Drops Across Popular Brands

The price check shows that prices have been cut sharply in recent days. Particularly on some of the most well-known classics, the price drop is extreme:

  • Nidar Marzipan Sausage (110g): Cost 29.90 kroner on Tuesday, now 15.90 kroner at all low-price chains – a price drop of almost 47 percent.
  • Freia Easter Buddies (120g): The price has plummeted from 34.90 kroner on Tuesday to 18.90 kroner on Friday, making the item 46 percent cheaper in three days.
  • Nidar Chocolate Eggs (187g): Prices have fallen from 34.90 kroner to 20.90 kroner at some chains, representing a cut of over 40 percent.
  • Nidar Kolibri Egg (168g): Decreased from 34.90 to 22.90 kroner in the same period.
  • Kvikk Lunsj 6-pack: Now 39 kroner, slightly cheaper than Tuesday, but the same price as observed by Nettavisen on Wednesday.

However, these low prices reach with a catch: stores are not restocking.

No New Deliveries Expected

“When the stores are sold out and the warehouses are empty, there will be no new deliveries until next season. What is in the store now is what we have left,” says communications director at Extra, Harald Kristiansen.

Kiwi’s communications manager, Nora Helgesen, explains that they are seeing large local variations. “We see that a few stores have begun to run out of certain varieties of Easter candy. We will not receive new deliveries of the candy itself,” Helgesen states, adding that there should be sufficient stock in most locations.

Rema 1000’s director of communications and society, Marte Ramuz Eriksen, says they are working hard to replenish stock where they have it, but the pace of sales is creating challenges. “We will generally have good stock in most stores, but inventory may vary somewhat from store to store. At times, goods may as well run out faster than we can restock,” says Eriksen.

The Future of Easter Candy: Trends and Predictions

The current situation highlights several emerging trends in the retail and confectionery industries. The aggressive price wars, while beneficial for consumers in the short term, are forcing retailers to carefully manage inventory and anticipate demand. This is particularly relevant for seasonal products like Easter candy.

The Rise of Discount Retailers and Private Label Brands

The success of low-price chains like Kiwi, Rema 1000, and Extra demonstrates the growing power of discount retailers. Consumers are increasingly price-sensitive, and these stores are capitalizing on that trend. This pressure is also driving the growth of private label brands, as retailers seek to offer lower-cost alternatives to established brands.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities and Seasonal Demand

The rapid depletion of Easter candy stocks underscores the vulnerabilities in supply chains, especially when faced with unexpected surges in demand. Seasonal products, with their concentrated sales periods, are particularly susceptible to these disruptions. Retailers are likely to invest in more sophisticated forecasting and inventory management systems to mitigate these risks.

Sustainability Concerns and Palm Oil Alternatives

While not directly addressed in this current price war, the long-term trend towards sustainable products remains significant. Rema 1000’s previous decision to boycott Freia’s Easter eggs due to palm oil content (reported in 2017) demonstrates consumer and retailer pressure for more environmentally friendly options. Manufacturers will continue to explore alternatives to palm oil and other controversial ingredients.

The Impact of Online Shopping and Direct-to-Consumer Models

Whereas this article focuses on in-store sales, the growth of online shopping is also influencing the confectionery market. Direct-to-consumer brands are bypassing traditional retailers and offering personalized experiences and subscription services. This trend is likely to accelerate, providing consumers with more choices and convenience.
