Eastleigh Borough Council cuts staff and productions at The Point Theatre

Eastleigh Borough Council is cutting original productions and staff at The Point Theatre to prioritize commercial activity and funded community events. The move includes the redundancy of the venue’s artistic director and theatre programmer following an internal consultation held from July to August, BBC reported.

The Point Theatre cuts original productions and staff

The venue has cancelled several upcoming original shows, including this year’s Christmas production, The Frog Princess, and its Halloween programming. Eastleigh Borough Council, which owns the theatre, stated the changes are intended to ensure future financial resilience and create a cultural offer that is “affordable and sustainable in the long term.”

The council provided a net subsidy of £712,020 for its Arts and Culture service in 2025/2026, which covers both The Point and its sister venue, The Berry. While the council recognizes that arts venues provide social and educational benefits, it maintained that operating models and public subsidy levels are not “beyond review” to ensure value for taxpayers.

Did you know? The council’s 2025/2026 subsidy for its arts service totals over £712,000, yet the theatre is shifting away from original works toward touring acts and tribute bands.

Freelance artists lose contracts without consultation

A group of 27 artists and creatives wrote to the council in July to voice concerns over the internal consultation process. Freelance composer David Lewington, who has worked with the theatre for 15 years, said the decision to axe shows left him without alternative income. Lewington was contracted for three upcoming productions, including the Christmas show.

Lewington described the decision as “mind-bogglingly bad” and noted that the consultation remained internal to the council. “We’ve essentially been dumped mid-way through a contract,” Lewington said, adding that it is now too late to find alternative work for the Christmas period.

Singer-songwriter Lucy Rachel told the BBC that the council “bulldozed through” a culturally vibrant system and failed to engage with the creative community. She described the theatre as a vital starting point for young artists.
