Ellen O’Brien, formerly of Claggan Ballycroy and more recently of Derrycoosh, Islandeady, Castlebar, passed away unexpectedly on February 28th, 2026, at Mayo University Hospital.
A Life Remembered
Ellen was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary (née Ginty), and her brothers, Mattie, Peter, and Michael. She is survived by her husband, William, her children, Donald and Sharon, and her grandchildren, Claire and Steven.
The family circle as well includes her great-granddaughter, Robyn, who is two weeks traditional, her daughter-in-law Sandra O’Brien, and her son-in-law Sean Treacy. Ellen’s brothers, Pat (Birmingham UK), Frank (Ballycroy), and John (Ballycroy), along with her sisters, Mary Bridget Boylan (Dublin) and Christina Prichard (Dublin), also mourn her loss.
Her godchild, Margaret, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, will also remember her fondly.
Funeral Arrangements
Ellen will repose in Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar F23 FD90, on Tuesday, March 3rd, beginning at 5:30 PM, with prayers at 7:00 PM. Following prayers, her remains will be removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 4th, at 11:00 AM in the Church of the Holy Rosary. After the Mass, Ellen will be laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Newport Road, Castlebar.
For those unable to attend in person, the Funeral Mass will be live-streamed on www.churchtv.ie/castlebar and can also be heard on Castlebar Parish Radio 105.3fm.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Irish Kidney Association c/o Kilcoyne Funeral Directors, Thomas Street, Castlebar. The family has requested privacy at their home.
