“So as soon as the cost to orbit drops to a low number, it immediately makes extremely compelling sense to put AI in space,” he said. “It becomes a no-brainer, basically.”

Musk revealed a concept design for mini AI satellites, each equipped with solar panels capable of generating 100 KW of power, with future iterations potentially reaching the megawatt range. He suggests these satellites offer a solution to the challenge of locating AI computing centers, as “no one wants AI computing centers in their backyard.”

Beyond Earth: An Industrial Base on the Moon

Musk’s long-term vision extends even further, proposing the establishment of an industrial base on the moon. This would unlock the potential for petawatt-scale AI compute – a thousand times more powerful than a terawatt. He even alluded to a future of abundance, with free trips to Saturn in a post-scarcity economy, acknowledging the far-fetched nature of the proposal.
