Emergency Radio Sales Surge After Telenor Network Outage
Emergency radio sales tripled in a single week following a four-hour nationwide failure of Telenor’s mobile network in early October, according to e24.no. Retail chain Power reported a threefold increase in sales, while Biltema recorded a 130 percent growth over the period, figures cited by TV 2 show.
Silje Ensrud, Nordic communications manager at Power, told TV 2 that news reports about communication breakdowns regularly remind people to secure backup equipment.
Clas Ohlson also experienced a 45 percent rise in sales compared to the week preceding the network failure. At Biltema, sales surged by 130 percent during the two weeks following the disruption, compared to the preceding two weeks.
Young Adults Drive Preparedness Purchases Despite Knowledge Gaps
A survey conducted on behalf of Power indicates that nearly four out of ten young adults considered or initiated emergency preparedness measures following the Telenor outage. Roughly 16 percent of respondents reported acquiring an emergency radio as a direct result of the incident.
More than half of young respondents did not know that NRK P1 serves as the official emergency broadcast channel for Norwegian authorities. Four out of five young adults stated they would initially search for information elsewhere if power and mobile networks failed completely.
Kari Helene Partapuoli, general secretary of Sanitetskvinnene, described the lack of awareness as concerning. She told TV 2 that emergency radios remain a critical component of household preparedness because they ensure access to official advisories when standard communication channels go offline.
Recommended Household Preparedness Items
According to the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB), households should maintain a stock of essential supplies to sustain themselves during a crisis. The agency recommends storing twenty liters of water per person alongside a DAB radio, extra batteries, and a fully charged power bank.
The official checklist also includes a physical list of important telephone numbers, non-perishable food items that require no heating, a flashlight, candles, matches, and alternative heating sources such as a gas or paraffin heater. Additional recommended items consist of warm clothing, blankets, hygiene products, a first-aid kit, and essential medications alongside iodine tablets.
