Calls for Support from Former President
A Gesture of Support
Following a call to action by former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on his social media, Ernesto Alejandro Prieto Gallardo, a federal congressman, donated one month’s salary to support Cuba. The donation comes as Cuba faces economic hardship due to disruptions in oil shipments from Venezuela and Mexico.
Expanding the Circle of Support
Prieto Gallardo encouraged fellow lawmakers – senators, federal and local deputies, and municipal presidents – to contribute to the cause, suggesting transfers from their salaries and public sharing of donation receipts.
Past Controversies
Prieto Gallardo has faced prior accusations, including allegations of sexual abuse and being a delinquent in child support payments. In 2019, he was expelled from Morena, the political party he currently represents, due to gender-based political violence, though he later successfully challenged the decision in court.
