Oslo’s snow chaos might be over, but the tog chaos remains. Commuters in the capital faced fewer trains and overcrowded carriages on Wednesday, leading to frustration and even medical emergencies.
Rebecca Isaksen, a commuter, shared her experience, "The train was so full, it was like a sauna. The air was bad, and it was obvious that some people were struggling." She witnessed a passenger needing medical help due to the overcrowding.
Rebecca decided to leave the train at Lysaker, even though the next one was an hour away. "It was an unpleasant experience. I think about elderly or people with health issues, it can’t be good for them," she said.
Vy apologizes for the situation
Vy, the Norwegian rail operator, apologized for the incident. "It’s obviously a very unpleasant experience for everyone on board when the train is so full that passengers find it uncomfortable," said Siv Eggen Westin, Vy’s communications chief.
She couldn’t explain why the train had half as many carriages as usual but acknowledged that it wasn’t desirable.
Commuters vent their frustration
Cato Gjertsen, a daily commuter between Oslo and Asker, opted to stay on the train despite the discomfort. His 20-minute journey turned into a much longer ordeal. "It’s not uncommon for delays to affect either my work or private life," he complained.

Cato had to postpone evenings and miss his son’s training due to train issues. "At some point, your understanding for Vy and Bane Nor runs out. You just want to get home," he sighed. He believes the service he’s paying for is far from what he’s expecting to receive.

Bane Nor, the Norwegian rail infrastructure manager, admitted that mild weather and snow clearance are making it challenging to restore normal train services. Skins replacement, a necessary maintenance task, requires fewer trains to allow space for machinery, causing further delays, especially during rush hours.
Cutting extra services during rush hours
When it comes to cutting services, extra rush hour trains are the first to go. Vy believes maintaining a good basic service is more important. "It’s not like we can park many trains in Oslo during the morning rush and let them wait until the evening rush. There’s no room for them to wait. Those trains need to be on the tracks all day to keep the logistics running," Westin explained.
Ailing infrastructure and increasing demand
The current train troubles aren’t just about the weather. The infrastructure is old, and demand for train travel is increasing. Bane Nor notes that around 1,200 trains arrive in Oslo daily, putting immense pressure on the aging infrastructure.
