Committee on Social Development Convenes in Bangkok to Tackle Poverty
Ministers, senior policymakers, and experts are gathering at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok for the ninth session of the Committee on Social Development (CSD9). Convened by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the meeting runs from November 11 to November 13 to examine ways to alleviate poverty, strengthen social protection systems, respond to population ageing, and invest in the care economy.
Delegates will explore how countries can better coordinate social policies to address emerging challenges, build resilient societies, and ensure development benefits reach everyone. The multi-day gathering features key addresses from regional leaders, including Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP. Other high-level speakers include Thailand’s Minister of Social Development and Human Security Nikorn Soemklang, Cambodia’s Minister of Women’s Affairs Ing Kantha Phavi, Indonesia National Economic Council member Arief Anshory Yusuf, and Maldives Minister of State for Health, Family and Welfare Zeenaz Adhnan.
Launch of Social Outlook for Asia and the Pacific 2026
The session marks the official launch of the Social Outlook for Asia and the Pacific 2026: Eradicating Poverty and Empowering People report. ESCAP stated that the publication examines regional poverty trends and demonstrates how hardship extends beyond a lack of income to encompass multiple forms of deprivation. These include poor housing, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to education.
To combat these compounding challenges, the report highlights the necessity of coordinated investment in human capital, decent work, and the social and solidarity economy. Member states will use the forum to share national experiences and renew commitments to the Action Plan to Strengthen Regional Cooperation on Social Protection in Asia and the Pacific. Countries will also discuss preparations for the Fifth Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.
