Ex-IAS Officer Found Murdered in Bhopal Home, Caretaker Missing

Retired IAS officer Rakesh Agrawal was discovered dead with his throat cut at his Suraj Nagar home within the jurisdiction of the Ratibad police station early Wednesday morning. Police launched an investigation into the homicide, focusing heavily on the sudden disappearance of a caretaker who had been hired through an agency just three days before the fatal incident.

Discovery of the Crime Scene in Suraj Nagar

Agrawal’s body was discovered inside his bedroom at his residence located behind Panghat Colony in Suraj Nagar. According to ACP Ankita Khatarkar, investigators place the suspected time of the murder between 2 am and 3 am. A forensic team examined the house to collect physical evidence while authorities began reconstructing the timeline of the intervening hours.

The sequence of the discovery unfolded early in the morning when Agrawal’s wife woke up at approximately 4 am and found the door of her room latched from the outside. Police stated that she called another caretaker, Amar, who assisted in opening the door and subsequently found Agrawal lying dead inside with his throat slit.

Police Focus on Missing Caretaker and Evidence

Investigators are closely examining the movements of Varun Kumar, a 24-hour caretaker-cum-male nurse who was hired through an agency three days prior to the incident. Kumar, reportedly from Punjab, has been missing since the murder, prompting police to suspect he may have fled the premises. Officials noted that most of Kumar’s belongings, aside from a pair of clothes, were also missing from the house.

“The caretaker had been hired through an agency three days ago as a 24-hour caretaker-cum-male nurse. He is currently untraceable, and we are trying to establish his movements,” ACP Khatarkar told The Indian Express. Law enforcement has not yet conclusively established Kumar’s role in the crime. Detectives are reviewing physical evidence, CCTV footage from the surrounding neighborhood, and other leads to determine who was inside the home during the killing and how they departed.

Authorities have not yet established a motive for the attack. “So far, no valuables were missing from the house. Only after the suspect is arrested can we establish what transpired,” ACP Khatarkar stated.

Over his extensive career prior to retirement, he served in a succession of senior positions including district collector, deputy secretary, joint secretary, additional secretary, managing director, director, secretary, and principal secretary.

An employee present at the residence recounted being woken up by the officer’s wife. “She said the gate was closed, so I went up to the house. Inside, the nozzle of the gas cylinder was left on. There was nothing suspicious in the last 2-3 days,” the employee said.
