Ferrari’s Bahrain Test Triumph: A Sign of Things to Approach in F1 2026?

Charles Leclerc topped the final day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain, setting a blistering lap time of 1:31.992 and signaling Ferrari’s intent for the 2026 season. The Monegasque driver finished 0.879 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris, a significant margin that has ignited excitement among Ferrari fans and analysts alike.

Leclerc Leads the Charge

Ferrari opted to have Leclerc run throughout the entirety of Friday’s session, while novel signing Lewis Hamilton observed from the garage. Beyond the headline lap time, Leclerc also impressed with his race simulation, demonstrating consistent pace and control. This performance builds on initial optimism following the opening day of track action, where Leclerc showed promising speed.

The Competitive Landscape: Who Else Shined?

While Leclerc dominated the timesheets, the Bahrain test offered a glimpse into the potential pecking order for the season opener in Melbourne. Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished third, 1.117 seconds behind Leclerc, while George Russell placed fourth for Mercedes, 1.205 seconds off the pace. Though, Mercedes are still widely considered favorites for the Australian Grand Prix.

Interestingly, Verstappen didn’t appear to be pushing for an outright fastest time, and Russell’s lap was slower than Kimi Antonelli’s best time from Thursday, suggesting both teams may have been holding back some performance. Antonelli’s testing was hampered by a pneumatic pressure issue that limited his track time.

Mercedes’ Strategy and the Race Simulation Picture

Neither Red Bull nor Mercedes completed full race simulations on the final day of testing. However, Mercedes reportedly had the best long-run pace, indicating strong potential for race day. Ferrari, conducted a full race simulation at the hottest point of the day, achieving competitive times. This suggests Ferrari is confident in their ability to manage tire degradation and maintain pace over a race distance.

Midfield Battle Heats Up

Behind the leading quartet, Alpine and Haas appear to be leading the midfield pack. Racing Bulls, Audi, and Williams are further back, while Aston Martin and Cadillac are locked in a battle to avoid being at the rear of the grid. Aston Martin, in particular, has faced reliability issues during pre-season testing.

The Australian Grand Prix: What to Expect

The Australian Grand Prix on March 6-8 will be the true test of these pre-season findings. Ferrari’s strong showing in Bahrain has undoubtedly raised expectations, but Leclerc cautioned against reading too much into the lap times, emphasizing the importance of analyzing data and preparing for the unique challenges of Melbourne.

A final practice start saw George Russell on pole, with Leclerc in fifth, demonstrating Ferrari’s strong starting potential thanks to their small turbo. Russell managed to hold off Leclerc at the start, hinting at a potentially close battle in the opening laps of the race.

Driver Team Time Laps
1) Charles Leclerc* Ferrari 1:31.992 132
2) Lando Norris McLaren +0.879 47
3) Max Verstappen Red Bull +1.117 65
4) George Russell Mercedes +1.205 82

Ferrari’s strong starts are attributed to their small turbocharger, which provides rapid acceleration off the line.
