Hong Kong’s FilMart, a key marketplace for the film and television industry, continues to serve as a central hub for producers, distributors, and innovators from around the globe. Now in its third decade, the event is organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).
A Transforming Landscape
This year’s market reflects significant shifts within the entertainment industry. New technologies are reshaping production methods, storytelling formats are rapidly evolving, and producers are increasingly seeking international collaborations.
According to Candas Yeung, associate director of service promotion at the HKTDC, “We are deeply encouraged by the industry’s response this year,” noting the participation of over 790 exhibitors from more than 30 countries and regions.
Expanding Global Reach
The event showcases a diverse range of territories, with over 30 group pavilions from the Chinese Mainland and key international markets. Strong representation is expected from France, the U.K., the U.S., and Korea, alongside growing participation from other Asian countries.
FilMart is likewise seeing increased involvement from emerging markets, with first-time exhibitors bringing new perspectives and creative energy. Established players continue to utilize the event to secure financing and distribution deals.
Delegations from Cambodia, India, and Malaysia are joining established pavilions from Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, highlighting the region’s expanding role in global content creation.
Technology and New Formats
Technology remains a central focus, with the return of the AI Hub, co-organized with the Assn. Of Motion Picture Post Production Professionals. The hub features industry leaders like Alibaba Cloud, Kling, MiniMax, and Vidu, alongside academic partners including the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Lingnan University.
A newly launched AI Academy, backed by CCIDA and the Film Development Fund, will offer over 15 hands-on workshops designed to equip filmmakers and producers with practical skills in areas like generative text, audio, and animation.
Short-form storytelling is also gaining prominence, with the debut of a dedicated pavilion from the International Short Drama Assn. A symposium will explore the opportunities presented by short dramas and the role of AI in streamlining production.
Connecting Producers
The Producers Connect program is returning for its second edition, bringing together over 100 local and international producers with 10 global film institutions, including Cinecittà, the British Film Institute, and KOFIC. The program includes networking events, masterclasses, and an online resource guide.
