Firefox 149: A Leap Forward in Productivity and Security

Mozilla has rolled out Firefox 149, bringing a suite of improvements focused on multitasking, security, and user experience. The latest update delivers long-awaited features like split-screen browsing and refined PDF handling, alongside crucial security enhancements and interface tweaks.

Unlock Seamless Multitasking with Split View

Firefox now joins competitors like Microsoft Edge and Vivaldi with the introduction of a built-in split-screen mode. This feature allows users to view two web pages side-by-side within a single browser window, streamlining workflows for research, comparison shopping, or referencing information. Users can access Split View by right-clicking on a tab and selecting ‘Open in Split View.’ The feature was previously available in Firefox Nightly and Beta versions, and is now generally available.

Enhanced PDF Experience

Firefox 149 also brings improvements to PDF handling. PDF files now load faster thanks to hardware acceleration, particularly for large or graphics-intensive documents. A new context menu option allows users to directly download images from PDFs, eliminating the need for screenshots or external editors.

Bolstered Security: Blocking Malicious Notifications

Security is a key focus in this release. Firefox 149 automatically blocks notification permissions for websites flagged as malicious by SafeBrowsing, and permanently revokes those permissions. This prevents abusive background notifications – often used for ads or phishing attempts – from interrupting users.

Streamlined Interface and Accessibility

The browser’s interface has been refined with a new ‘Trust Panel’ in the address bar, consolidating privacy and security information into a single, easily accessible location. On Linux systems, Firefox now defaults to the XDG portal file picker. On Windows, the WebRender layer compositor is enabled, reducing power usage during full-screen video playback and improving WebGL and WebGPU performance. The browser also switches to the modern Windows geolocation API.

Additional Improvements

Further enhancements include a customizable Share button for the toolbar and expanded Address Autofill support for users in Australia, India, Italy, Poland, and Austria. Error pages have also been redesigned with updated visuals. Networking improvements enhance the robustness of HTTP/3 uploads under unstable conditions.

Send pages via system-sharing options

Firefox 149 is available for download from Mozilla’s official website, the Microsoft Store, and the Apple App Store.
