Graham Baba Architects completes Yakima golf course clubhouse

Graham Baba Architects has completed a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse and driving range facility at the Westwood Golf course in Yakima, Washington, Dezeen reported. The Seattle-based studio designed the two-level, L-shaped building to serve as a minimalist nod to the agrarian structures of the surrounding semi-arid agricultural region, which is well-known for its orchards and hop fields.

Timber and Concrete Construction at Westwood Golf

The newly constructed clubhouse departs from standard driving range facilities by utilizing mass timber panels for its roof and upper floor. Steel and glued-laminated columns and beams support the timber structure, creating a 20-foot clear span between columns that allows for unencumbered golf swings. According to Graham Baba Architects, the exposed timber introduces warmth and depth, contrasting with typical pan-deck and painted concrete driving ranges.

On the ground level, wooden boards were used to form the concrete walls. This technique softens the building’s expression, introduces a horizontal rhythm across the flat site, and breaks down the scale of the concrete. Corten-steel shade screens wrap select areas of the building, providing visual texture as light rakes across the surfaces.

Facility houses twenty eight driving range stations and multiple bars

The ground level contains a restaurant, bar, pro shop, and 14 driving range bays. An additional 14 bays, a second bar, and an enclosed event space occupy the upper floor. A broad terrace on the upper level overlooks the golf course, capturing cross breezes and long views, while the lower range offers more protection and shade from wind and direct sun.

The facility houses 28 driving-range stations in total, including high-tech bays capable of simulating golf courses from around the world. Below the main structure sits a golf cart garage and a supplemental kitchen to support the ground-floor restaurant. The project also incorporates a green roof and an on-site stormwater management system that channels rainwater to a pond for summer irrigation.
