Heat alerts for parts of NZ, severe weather to lash South Island

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

New Zealand is bracing for a weekend of challenging weather, with MetService issuing a series of severe weather warnings and watches, alongside widespread heat alerts. The approaching conditions are being monitored closely as a front moves across the country.

Heat to Rise Across the Country

Heat alerts are currently in place for Whakatāne, Napier, Hastings, Motueka, Blenheim and Kaikōura, and will expand tomorrow to include Paihia and Russell, Whangārei, Whitianga, Tauranga, Gisborne, Masterton and Christchurch. While New Zealand will not experience the extreme temperatures seen in Australia – where some cities reached 40C to 45C – MetService meteorologist Clare O’Connor stressed the importance of planning for high temperatures. “Thankfully we aren’t receiving the full brunt of the Australian heat… but these are still high temperatures for New Zealand and planning accordingly is crucial,” she said.

Did You Know? Heat alerts are determined by temperature thresholds established by meteorologists for 46 locations, based on two decades of historical climate data.

Severe Weather on the Horizon

Beyond the heat, a front is expected to bring heavy rain to the southwest of the South Island on Saturday. This will be followed by an active frontal system bringing heavy rain and severe northwest gales to central and southern New Zealand from Saturday night through to early Monday morning. An orange heavy rain warning is currently in effect for the ranges of the Westland District, north of Haast, and a strong wind warning is in place for Canterbury’s high country and foothills.

Watches in Effect

Numerous heavy rain and strong wind watches are also active across other parts of the South Island and lower North Island. Residents in these areas are urged to stay informed and prepare for potential disruptions.

Expert Insight: The combination of heat and approaching severe weather systems highlights the potential for rapid changes in conditions. Residents should be prepared for a range of impacts, from heat stress to flooding and strong winds, and prioritize safety measures accordingly.

Looking Ahead

If the forecasted conditions materialize, communities could experience localized flooding, particularly in areas under heavy rain warnings and watches. Strong winds may disrupt travel and potentially cause damage to infrastructure. Hastings is forecast to reach 37C this weekend, with Napier expected to reach 35C, posing a risk of heat-related illness. Should the active frontal system track as predicted, central and southern New Zealand may face significant disruptions from heavy rain and strong winds into Monday.
