Taipei–Hong Kong Route Regains Global Top Spot; Three Singapore Routes Make the Cut
The skies are abuzz with activity as the world’s most bustling international routes have been revealed for 2024. In a significant development, the Taipei-Hong Kong route has reclaimed the crown as the globe’s most traveled air route, according to data compiled by OAG, an air travel intelligence company.
The route, which connects two of Asia’s major economic hubs, saw an impressive passenger volume of over 678 million in 2023, catapulting it to the top of the list. This remarkable feat marks a strong recovery for the route, which had previously held the title before the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
In addition to the Taipei-Hong Kong route, three Singapore-based routes have also secured spots in the top ten. These include Singapore-London, Singapore-Jakarta, and Singapore-Chengdu, reflecting the city-state’s status as a major global aviation hub.
However, the Taipei-Hong Kong route still has some way to go before reaching pre-pandemic levels. Passenger numbers are currently around 15% lower than in 2019, highlighting the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global air travel.
The top ten list is as follows:
- Taipei-Hong Kong
- Hong Kong-Taipei
- London-New York
- New York-London
- Tokyo-Osaka
- Osaka-Tokyo
- Singapore-London
- Singapore-Jakarta
- Singapore-Chengdu
- Shanghai-Beijing
These rankings are based on the number of flights each route offers, as well as the number of passengers they carry. The data underscores the continued importance of Asian routes in global air travel, with seven out of the ten most traveled routes connecting cities in the region.
As air travel continues to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, these rankings serve as a barometer of the industry’s health and growth. With the Taipei-Hong Kong route reclaiming its throne, it’s clear that Asia’s air travel market is once again taking center stage in the global aviation landscape.
