The Canadian government has appointed 35-year-old Angad Singh Dhillon as its new ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced the appointment of the Indian-origin diplomat as “ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary,” marking the highest-ranking diplomatic role for a mission head. Dhillon, who moved to Canada in 2010, previously served as a close adviser to Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Diplomatic Background and Political Career
Dhillon’s path to the ambassadorship began in 2015 when he entered Canadian politics as a field organizer in the Peel region. According to Global Affairs Canada, he later joined the Liberal Research Bureau, focusing on policy work related to East European and South Asian communities. His portfolio includes serving as Chief of Staff to two federal cabinet ministers, specifically within the transport and small business sectors. Global Affairs Canada noted that he supported the country’s participation in international forums such as the G7, G20, the United Nations General Assembly, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.
Role in Canada’s International Relations
During his tenure as an adviser to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Dhillon played a role in re-establishing diplomatic communication channels with key international partners, including China and India.
Roots in Punjab and Ties to India
Despite his diplomatic career in Canada, Dhillon maintains strong personal connections to his ancestral home in the village of Ghungrana, located in the Ludhiana district of Punjab. Born in Chandigarh to parents who still reside there, he credits his upbringing—including frequent childhood visits to his grandparents—with grounding his identity. “Nothing can really take Punjab out of me,” Dhillon told The Indian Express, though he emphasized that his professional loyalties remain with Canada. His family history includes deep roots in regional politics and public service; his paternal great-grandfather was a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in 1937, and his grandfather was a senior Akali Dal leader who served on an agriculture committee under former Prime Minister V.P. Singh.
Educational Foundation
Dhillon’s academic background prepared him for a career in international relations. He attended Yadavindra Public School in Mohali and completed his pre-university education at Mahindra United World College in Pune. In 2010, at age 19, he moved to Canada to pursue a bachelor’s degree in international relations at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. This transition marked the beginning of his life in Canada, a country he now represents on the global stage.
