Indonesian authorities have uncovered a mephedrone drug laboratory in Gianyar, Bali, believed to be operated by a Russian-controlled syndicate. The operation, discovered on March 5 at approximately 11:45 p.m., led to the arrest of two Russian nationals, identified as NT/KS (female) and ST (male).
Large-Scale Operation
This marks the first time authorities in Indonesia have discovered a mephedrone production laboratory of this scale. Brigadier General Roy Hardi Siahaan, BNN Acting Deputy for Eradication, stated the total quantity seized amounted to 7.3 kilograms net. Prior to this, only small amounts of mephedrone had been detected within the country.
The suspects, who have been residing in Indonesia since January 2026, are suspected of actively producing and distributing the synthetic drug. Authorities seized both liquid and crystalline forms of mephedrone, along with chemicals and equipment used in its manufacture.
Suspect Backgrounds
Initial investigations revealed that NT had studied biology in Russia, a background authorities believe contributed to her role in the drug’s production. ST, meanwhile, reportedly previously served in the Russian military’s intelligence division, leaving due to health reasons.
Approximately 644 grams of solid mephedrone and 7,250 milliliters of liquid solution were confiscated, totaling around 7.9 kilograms gross weight. Investigators as well seized digital scales, respirator masks, glass flasks, and magnetic stirrers, along with substantial quantities of chemical precursors.
