A Childhood Shaped by Hardship
Rus grew up in a small town in Northwest Iowa, population around 700, where his family faced the challenges of poverty and mental health issues. He knew he was gay from a young age, but lacked guidance and support in understanding his identity. This experience fuels his dedication to ensuring future generations don’t endure similar hardships.
After a period living in Chicago, Rus returned to Iowa in 2018 to be closer to family. A pivotal moment of generosity during his college years at Simpson College continues to inspire his operate.
