SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Bo Horvat scored with 39.6 seconds left in overtime, lifting the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.
Tony DeAngelo also scored for New York, and Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves. The Islanders snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 9-0 in overtime games this season. This was the Islanders’ second win against the Sharks this season.
For the Sharks, Macklin Celebrini scored his 32nd goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough. Yaroslav Askarov made 32 saves in goal for San Jose, which had also lost in overtime against St. Louis on Friday.
Saturday’s game also marked the debut of Brayden Schenn for the Islanders. He was recently acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Jonathan Drouin, a goaltending prospect, and draft picks. Schenn had one shot and a blocked shot during his 17 minutes and 26 seconds of ice time.
The game saw an early exchange of goals, with both teams scoring in the first period before a lengthy scoring drought. After Celebrini tied the game at 1-1 just 33 seconds into the second period, neither team managed to score for nearly 44 minutes.
Horvat’s winning goal ended the stalemate. He scored on a backhand shot, assisted by Matthew Schaefer and Mathew Barzal. DeAngelo had put the Islanders ahead earlier in the game with his fifth goal of the season, at the 8:23 mark of the first period, assisted by Calum Ritchie.
Celebrini, a 19-year-old player for the Sharks, tied the game in the second period with his third goal in as many games. He was assisted by Will Smith and John Klingberg.
The Islanders will next play at St. Louis on Tuesday, while the Sharks will host Buffalo on Tuesday.
