Bulgaria: GERB‘s Christov Calls for Change in Government Amidst Criticism

Bulgarian politician Ivan Christov of the "Eдинение" party has called for a significant change in the country’s government, suggesting that GERB should take full responsibility for past failures and form a coalition with "Възраждане". However, he acknowledges the low likelihood of this happening, as reported by the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Christov, a seasoned financier and former deputy minister of agriculture, expressed his skepticism about GERB’s leader, Boyko Borisov, and his recent statements regarding partnership with nationalistic parties. He pointed out the hypocrisy in Borisov’s argument, given that he himself had previously governed with Volen Siderov and Valeri Simeonov, and that French President Emmanuel Macron has been working with Marine Le Pen’s party.

"He keeps screaming about how the EPP will be angry, but he forgets that France is working with Le Pen’s party. Moreover, compared to Siderov and Simeonov, Kostadin Kostadinov looks quite civilized," Christov remarked. He also hinted at GERB’s alleged manipulative practices in parliament, but expressed his certainty that Borisov would not form a government with his preferred party, "Възраждане".

Christov was particularly critical of the negotiations between GERB and "Демократична България" (DB) for a potential government. He described it as a "suicidal mission" to discuss anti-corruption measures with Borisov, likening it to negotiating with the Ottoman Sultan about ending the Bulgarian Islamic rule or discussing press freedom with Vladimir Putin.

The politician also weighed in on the proposed Budget 2025, describing it as "highly inflationary and pro-corruption". He noted the lack of discussions about the budget among the supposedly negotiating parties – GERB, DB, BSNP, and "Има такъв народ".

Christov emphasized that the public has clear expectations, and any failure to meet these expectations could lead to decreased turnout in future elections. He advised DB to adopt a strong opposition stance against corruption.
