Kacey Musgraves has announced her sixth studio album, Middle of Nowhere, alongside the release of its lead single, “Dry Spell.” The 13-track album is slated for release on May 1 by Lost Highway, and features production from Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk.
Musgraves co-directed the video for “Dry Spell” with Hannah Lux Davis. Prior to the release, billboards appeared in several cities posing the question, “dry spell? Call for a real good time.” The song itself includes the lyrics, “ain’t nobody’s tool up in my shed / ain’t nobody’s boots under my bed / ain’t nobody’s truck in my drive / for a late night call for a real good time.”
According to Musgraves, the album was created during “the longest single period of my life.” She described becoming fascinated with “liminal space” and finding comfort in “being in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in many senses.”
Middle of Nowhere features collaborations with several prominent artists, including Willie Nelson on “Uncertain, Texas,” Miranda Lambert on “Horses and Divorces,” Billy Strings on “Everybody Wants To Be a Cowboy,” and Gregory Alan Isakov on “Coyote.” The album’s sound incorporates pedal steel, accordion, and Texas dancehall rhythms, blending country with influences from bluegrass, pop, norteño, and zydeco.
This album follows 2024’s Deeper Well, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Country albums chart. The song “The Architect” from Deeper Well won a Grammy for Best Country Song. As of now, Musgraves has not announced any tour dates to support Middle of Nowhere.
