Nord Derby Clash: Kiel and Flensburg Battle Amidst Injury Concerns
The EHF European League is set to ignite with the highly anticipated North Derby between THW Kiel and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Both teams, however, face challenges as key players are battling fitness issues ahead of Tuesday evening’s match.
Fatigue and Recovery Concerns
THW Kiel enters the match following two demanding Bundesliga contests against Rhein-Neckar Löwen and SC Magdeburg, both of which they narrowly won. The physical toll of these games is now apparent, with several players facing uncertainty for the North Derby.
Key Players in Doubt
The availability of playmaker Elias Ellefsen á Skipagötu, along with left-handed backcourt players Jesse Dahmke and Harald Reinkind, is currently questionable. Lukas Zerbe sustained an injury during the match against Magdeburg, leaving his participation uncertain.
Strategic Implications
“We will not be able to play with everyone who recently fought for 60 minutes against the Lions and against Magdeburg. Even those who are fit don’t have much left in the tank,” stated Kiel coach Filip Jicha.

Securing first place in the group stage carries significant advantages. The group winner gains direct entry into the quarter-finals, bypassing the play-off round. Kiel will also face Bidasoa Irun twice, even as Flensburg will compete against Montpellier.

“Wir spielen aktuell so etwas wie im EM-Rhythmus, da kommt es auch ein wenig auf die Belastungssteuerung an. Aber das Derby bleibt das Derby. Das ist etwas Besonderes, und das will jeder spielen”, freut sich Kiel-Coach Filip Jicha trotz der Personalsorgen. Auch Flensburg kann im Übrigen nicht auf den gesamten Kader zurückgreifen. Neben dem langzeitverletzten Lukas Jörgensen wird aller Voraussicht nach auch der zuletzt angeschlagene Kent Robin Tönnesen fehlen.
Zur Erklärung: Der Sieger einer Hauptrundengruppe zieht direkt ins Halbfinale ein und überspringt somit zwei Achtelfinal-Partien. Neben den beiden Duellen gegen den Rivalen spielt der THW zweimal gegen Bidasoa Irun, die SG gegen Montpellier.
