Kimi Antonelli arrives in Mexico with family for F1 title shot

Family Reunion in Mexico Ahead of Formula 1 Title Match

Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrived in Mexico City accompanied by his parents, Marco and Veronica, and his younger sister, Maggie, as the 20-year-old Mercedes driver stands on the verge of clinching his first Formula 1 World Championship. The family flew in together following a brief separation caused by racing commitments in Italy, uniting at the circuit ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix where a ninth-place finish will secure the drivers’ title. Papà Marco returned to Italy after his son’s victory in Austin to support his team at Mugello for the Italian GT championship’s final round, where his drivers Guy Albag and Lorenzo Ferrari secured pole position on Mercedes AMG before flying out on Friday evening with Veronica and Maggie to land in Mexico City yesterday afternoon.

The journey to the paddock mirrors a childhood spent around racing tracks, where a young Antonelli completed his homework inside team tents while his father managed Antonelli Motorsport. Born in Bologna on August 25, 2006, the driver tested an F1 car before obtaining a standard driver’s license or completing high school. Behind his development stood his mother Veronica, who insisted he complete his high school diploma and strive for a normal life.

A Childhood on the Track and Film Sets

Gian Carlo Minardi, the former Minardi team owner who discovered Fernando Alonso, initially spotted Antonelli, and Giovanni Minardi (son of Gian Carlo) assisted in bringing the driver to Toto Wolff following earlier contacts with Ferrari. Filmmaker Matteo Rovere recalled meeting the young driver in 2015 while shooting the movie Veloce come il vento, noting that nine-year-old Antonelli spent his time on set zipping around on go-karts provided by his father and even made a brief appearance as a child when actor Stefano Accorsi’s character Loris De Martino takes children to a swimming pool, where Kimi leaned out of a car window and dove into the water.
