KIT Secures €5.8 Million to Pioneer Future Technologies

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has been awarded €5.855 million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE) to bolster research infrastructure across four key areas: production technology, climate research, battery recycling, and quantum communication. This significant investment, announced on February 18, 2026, underscores Baden-Württemberg’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancement.

Boosting Production Technology with AI-Powered Lasers

A substantial portion of the funding will support the development of ModuLaF, a scalable laser technology platform at the KIT’s Innovations Campus Mobility of the Future, in collaboration with the University of Stuttgart. This platform will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize laser material processing, creating more resilient and flexible production systems. Professor Frederik Zanger of the wbk Institute for Production Technology at KIT highlighted the project’s potential to enhance the technological competitiveness of both Baden-Württemberg and Europe.

Climate Resilience Through Smart Sensor Networks

The 4SURE project, part of the Innovations Campus Sustainability, will establish a dense network of sensors across Karlsruhe, Freiburg, and other Baden-Württemberg communities. This network will provide real-time data on extreme weather events – such as heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall – and their impact on urban environments. Professor Jan Cermak of KIT’s Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research emphasized that this data will be crucial for sustainable and equitable urban development.

Closing the Loop: Advancing Battery Recycling

The Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm & Karlsruhe (CELEST) will receive funding for CERL, a research infrastructure dedicated to creating closed-loop material cycles in battery technology. The project aims to develop innovative recycling processes for lithium and post-lithium batteries, enabling efficient recovery and reuse of materials. Researchers will also explore “Design for Circularity” approaches, creating batteries specifically designed for recyclability.

Quantum Communication Networks Take Shape

KIT is partnering with the University of Stuttgart and the University of Ulm within the Innovations Campus QuantumBW to build QuantumBW.Net, a quantum network connecting Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Ulm. This network will facilitate the development and testing of quantum-secure communication technologies, a critical step towards realizing a quantum internet. Professor David Hunger of KIT’s Physics Department explained that this network will open up novel possibilities for secure communication and contribute to a nationwide quantum network.

EFRE Funding: A Catalyst for Innovation

The EFRE provides funding for innovation, growth, and employment across Europe. In Baden-Württemberg, the focus is on strategic technologies aligned with the EU’s Strategic Technologies for Europe (STEP) initiative. The investment in these research infrastructures aims to strengthen the region’s competitiveness as a science and technology hub.
