Kramer Soderberg Returns to St. Louis to Lead Maryville Saints Basketball

Maryville University has named Kramer Soderberg as its latest head men’s basketball coach, marking a return to the St. Louis area for the former player and coach. The announcement, made by Director of Athletics Brittany C. Fennell, signals a new chapter for the Saints basketball program.

A Family Legacy and Proven Track Record

Soderberg’s appointment carries a familiar name for St. Louis basketball fans. His father, Brad Soderberg, previously served as the head coach at Saint Louis University from 2002 through 2007. Kramer brings a successful coaching resume of his own, having most recently led Millikin University since 2021-22.

At Millikin, Soderberg quickly turned the program around. Inheriting a team that had won only one game the prior season, he guided the Massive Blue to a 14-12 record in his first year – their most wins since 2008-09. He also led Millikin to its most conference wins since 1993 and their first CCIW Tournament appearance in program history. His second season saw another winning record of 14-11.

Building a Culture of Excellence

Brittany C. Fennell expressed excitement about Soderberg’s vision for the program, emphasizing a commitment to “excellence, competitiveness, and pride both on and off the court.” Soderberg himself echoed this sentiment, stating his intention to build a program “built on a foundation of high-character and hard-working individuals.”

“Coming home to the St. Louis area has always been in the back of my mind,” Soderberg said. “Finally realizing that dream after 12 years is incredibly special for me and my family.”

From Lindenwood to Millikin: A Coaching Journey

Before taking the helm at Millikin, Soderberg spent eight years on the Millikin staff, starting as the top assistant coach in 2015. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Lindenwood University for three years. His coaching career began even as he was still a student at Lindenwood, where he also excelled as a player under his father.

Soderberg was a standout guard at Lindenwood, averaging 17 points per game and starting all 66 games of his collegiate career. He was a first-team All-HAAC selection and a member of the NAIA All-American Third-Team. He was inducted into the Lindenwood Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

Early Playing Career

Soderberg began his college career at Miami University, where he received the Randy Gunlock Scholar-Athlete Award during his freshman season.

The Future of Maryville Basketball

Soderberg’s focus will now turn to recruiting and establishing his vision for the Maryville Saints. His proven ability to build a winning culture and develop players suggests a promising future for the program.
