Kremlin Criticizes European Representation in Potential Ukraine Security Talks
Russia accused European nations of failing to determine who would represent the continent in future negotiations regarding security guarantees for Ukraine and the wider region, Reuters reported.
The diplomatic friction follows a recent gathering in Brussels where officials from the United States, Ukraine, NATO, and European partner nations met to discuss security arrangements for Ukraine alongside the broader European security architecture. Concurrently, U.S. President Donald Trump referenced a potential “big deal” that might encompass the entire continent.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, addressed reporters during a phone briefing regarding Europe’s prospective role in upcoming talks. He stated that Europe must inevitably be included in discussions surrounding mutual security guarantees between Russia and Ukraine, but noted that the continent has struggled to organize its stance.
“As for ideas from the Europeans, we have not received any. We have no information about any,” Peskov said, according to Reuters. He added that while discussions will eventually target the future European security system, the continent’s representatives have yet to resolve who holds the mandate to speak on their behalf.

Diplomatic Divisions and Lack of a Unified Mandate
News.bg reported that European leaders are conducting separate diplomatic tracks without a unified mandate or a single designated negotiator, leaving the continent with diminished influence over the emerging framework. Discussions about potential candidates have not been held, and the choice ultimately depends on the European states themselves, with Petr Pavel publicly declining to act as a European mediator for the conflict.
Peskov pointed directly to this internal friction during his remarks. “As we see, they still haven’t even managed to decide who can speak on their behalf. So on their part, we observe protracted indecision and unwillingness,” he stated, as cited by Reuters and News.bg.
KREMLIN ON EUROPE'S SECURITY AS PART OF UKRAINE SETTLEMENT: TALKS ARE NEEDED TO DISCUSS THE ISSUE AT SOME POINT, BUT EUROPE CAN'T DECIDE ON THEIR REPRESENTATIVES
Despite these criticisms, Moscow acknowledged a recent diplomatic touchpoint involving humanitarian efforts. Peskov described a meeting hosted at the White House by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump as positive. That gathering brought together Russian and Ukrainian representatives to discuss the preservation of a six-day ceasefire agreed upon for the Russian-controlled city of Олешки in southern Ukraine.
“This was a very positive meeting, and the most important thing is that the positive prospects and readiness to continue such humanitarian work are being maintained,” Peskov said.
