Lara Gillespie Wins Silver at UCI Track World Championships

Lorena Wiebes Defeats Lara Gillespie in Shanghai Scratch Race

As The Irish Times noted, UCI Track World Championships in Shanghai saw Lara Gillespie come within a whisker of securing another rainbow jersey, beaten to the finish line in the scratch race by Dutch competitor Lorena Wiebes. The 10km bunch race was effectively decided on the last of the 40 laps, after Wiebes launched a powerful finishing sprint with only Gillespie in hot pursuit. Gillespie made up ground around the final bend, but Wiebes held on to claim gold by less than half a wheel length.

The victory marked the third successive title in this event for the 27-year-old Wiebes. The Dutch rider had also defeated Gillespie by narrow margins in the final two sprint stages of the Tour of Chongming Island. Reflecting on the result, Gillespie told The Irish Times that she felt a mix of pride and frustration. Of course it was so close, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry to take silver at a World Championships, Gillespie said. But I think I can be proud of how I raced. It gives me confidence for the races coming up.

Tight Margins Define the Shanghai Velodrome Finish

The race remained largely tactical during the early stages at the Shanghai Velodrome on Chongming Island. According to RTE.ie and the Irish Examiner, the 40-lap event maintained a steady pace until French rider Valentine Fortin attacked with seven laps remaining, drawing Wiebes with her. Gillespie and the main bunch quickly shut down that move as the speed escalated. Wiebes launched her decisive attack with two laps to go, followed closely by Gillespie and Portugal’s Maria Martins, who secured the bronze medal.

For Gillespie, the result adds a silver medal to an impressive palmarès. A year after becoming the first Irish woman to claim a UCI world title by winning the elimination race in Chile, the 25-year-old Wicklow rider notched her 10th second-place finish of the season alongside two victories, The Irish Times noted. Her earlier results in October included a second-place finish in the omnium at the Three Days of Aigle in Switzerland.

Upcoming Schedule at the World Championships

Gillespie quickly turns her attention to the rest of the Shanghai competition schedule. She returns to the track on Friday to contest the omnium, a combined event comprising four races, where Wiebes is also the defending champion, The Irish Times reported. She will also line up for Sunday’s 25km points race, an event where she previously earned a bronze medal in 2024.

Other Irish riders competed in the morning sessions. Reporting from The Irish Times showed that Fiona Mangan, Emma Jeffers, Aoife O’Brien, and Esther Wong placed 16th in the team pursuit preliminary qualifying round with a time of 4:27.239, while the Irish Examiner noted that the squad undertook a re-run following a crash involving O’Brien. Great Britain topped the qualifying round with a time of 4:08.055.
