‘Like lighting a cigarette while trying to quit’: Australia approves new coal seam gas expansion | Environment

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

A major expansion of coal seam gas operations in Queensland has been given the green light by the federal government, with approval extending until 2081.

Gas Supply Security Project Approved

The approval allows Australia Pacific LNG – a joint venture between ConocoPhillips, Origin Energy, and Sinopec – to continue developing gas infrastructure in the Surat and Bowen basins. This could involve the construction of up to 1,695 new gas wells, 1,545 kilometers of pipelines, and three processing facilities.

Did You Know? The project is expected to produce approximately 2,033 petajoules of gas.

The project’s environmental report estimates that 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide will be emitted during construction and operation, with an additional 111 million tonnes resulting from the burning of the gas – exceeding Australia’s annual transport emissions.

Concerns Raised

Amanda McKenzie, chief executive of the Climate Council, stated this is the 36th fossil fuel project approved by the current government. McKenzie also said, “The government says it is committed to cutting climate pollution, but approving new coal and gas projects is like lighting another cigarette while you’re trying to quit smoking.”

Expert Insight: Approving projects with long lifespans, like this one extending to 2081, presents a significant challenge to achieving emissions reduction targets. The extended timeframe locks in fossil fuel dependence for decades, potentially hindering the transition to renewable energy sources.

Ellen Roberts, national coordinator for Lock the Gate, noted that Queensland’s landscape has already been impacted by over 16,000 coal seam gas wells. Roberts stated that existing gas companies already produce more gas than Australia uses, suggesting this project is primarily aimed at maximizing profits for multinational exporters.

A spokesperson for Australia Pacific LNG welcomed the approval, stating it will allow them to meet existing export contracts and provide gas supply to the east coast of Australia.

The government has stated the project was approved after “consideration of rigorous scientific advice” and will be subject to 126 environmental conditions. The project is also required to reduce emissions annually and reach net zero by 2050 under the government’s Safeguard Mechanism.
