Latvian residents are maintaining mobility well into their later years through daily physical routines, according to insights shared on the Latvijas Radio broadcast “Kā labāk dzīvot”. Speaking in a feature broadcast, legendary composer and singer Lolita Vambute and fitness trainer Roberts Radičuks highlighted that establishing consistent daily movement can preserve independence and manage chronic joint discomfort even at 90 years of age.
Daily Joint Care and Movement at Age 90
Lolita Vambute, who marked her 90th year, attributes her active lifestyle and lack of physical pain to a lifelong commitment to daily exercise. Vambute began focusing on solo performance movements and physical conditioning around the age of 35 to address persistent joint discomfort stemming from a childhood bout of bilateral pneumonia. Later diagnosed with polyarthritis, she tailored specific exercises for each joint to control and reduce pain.
“My story is very, very old, because basically today the way I am, that is my life’s work,” Vambute stated during the broadcast. She currently dedicates an hour and a half each day to gymnastics, beginning her routine by thoroughly rubbing her joints with her palms before performing targeted movements.
Expert Perspective on Preventive Fitness
Fitness trainer Roberts Radičuks emphasized that Vambute’s regimen illustrates the importance of listening to physical warning signs and maintaining functional capacity over time. Radičuks noted that individuals should regularly assess their daily performance boundaries—monitoring whether they can still execute physical tasks they managed a year prior—and adapt accordingly.
“Listen to your feelings and sensations—if I could do action X a year ago, today I also have to do X,” Radičuks explained. He advised combining self-awareness with guidance from specialists to select appropriate exercises that alleviate everyday physical strain before acute health issues arise.
