Manila LGU to cover PUJ drivers’ incomes, offer free jeepney rides

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Manila will launch a city-funded program offering free jeepney rides to commuters while simultaneously providing financial assistance to jeepney drivers. The initiative, announced Friday, March 27, comes as a response to the ongoing oil crisis and aims to alleviate the financial burden on both passengers and drivers.

A Collaborative Effort

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso reached an agreement with the presidents of 22 Jeepney Operators and Drivers Associations (JODAs) to implement the program. Under Executive Order No. 14, series of 2026, the Manila local government unit (LGU) will subsidize the daily operations of participating jeepneys.

Extensive Reach

Approximately 1,442 jeepneys are expected to participate, serving routes throughout Manila and nearby areas. The Manila Public Information Office (PIO) stated that the program is intended to ensure assistance reaches both commuters and drivers.

Did You Understand? Mayor Domagoso’s initiative was developed within 48 hours as a response to the global oil crisis.
Expert Insight: Providing direct financial support to drivers, while simultaneously offering fare-free rides, represents a significant intervention by a local government to mitigate the impact of external economic pressures on its citizens. This approach could serve as a model for other municipalities facing similar challenges, though its long-term sustainability will depend on available resources.

The initiative in Manila follows a similar, though smaller-scale, effort in Pasig, where Mayor Victor “Vico” Sotto has deployed five electric minibuses to offer free rides.
