A 28‑year‑old man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of inmate Johnathan Peter Trubuhovich at Mt Eden Corrections Facility.
Trubuhovich was taken to hospital in critical condition on 29 November after suffering a serious assault inside the prison. He later died from his injuries, prompting a homicide investigation.
Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend confirmed the charge today and noted that the accused is due to appear in the Auckland District Court.
“Our thoughts are with Mr Trubuhovich’s family at this difficult time,” Friend said.
The independent Corrections Inspectorate will conduct a review, according to MECF acting general manager Edith Pattinson. She emphasized a commitment to act urgently on any identified weaknesses.
Pattinson also stated that the victim was housed in a shared cell and that the suitability of that placement will be examined as part of the investigation.
She added that the victim’s family will be kept informed and that the findings will be shared once the review is complete.
